The Portuguese East-Indiaman was a masterpiece of the Portuguese Renaissance and in this paper the main principles and procedures of her architecture and carpentry have been discussed.

In this dissertation I discuss the principles and procedures of the architecture and carpentry of the hull of a nau for the India Route at the end of the 16th century, based on Fernando Oliveira’s book: Livro da Fabrica das Naos.
The dissertation is structured around two main chapters.
After summing up the life and work of Fernando Oliveira, I read the Livro da Fabrica das Naos focusing on three main aspects of the author’s shipbuilding philosophy: the search for a systematical point of view, the use of a biological paradigm and the development of an idea of progress.
In the second chapter, I analyse the theoretical bases that can provide a better understanding of the procedures for ship construction (iconography, documents, shipwrecks and scaled models) and I discuss all the stages of the building of a Portuguese Indiaman´s hull.
Key words: 16th century, Fernando Oliveira, Livro da Fabrica das Naos, shipbuilding, East-Indiaman.
