In recent decades, the knowledge of the underground network of canals has increased considerably. In addition, in the last years our understanding of the occupation and use of the urban land has been enriched by numerous sites, including new portions of underground channels.

The archaeological materials, discovered during a survey by Giovanni Mannino assistant of the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Palermo, are preserved at the Archaeological Museum A. Salinas in Palermo. This unpublished pottery allows to recognize seven phases of use, highlighting the continuative use of the cave since the Final Eneolithic – Early Bronze Age (2300-1800 BC) to the Medieval period, up to the 12th century BC. The analyses of the vessels and the historical reconstruction turned out to be useful to understand the settlement pattern in the heights of Palermo area.

The IW class is of difficult identification, due to its different shapes, fabrics, decorations, production centres and traditions in a large temporal range. The use of the impasto vessels is attested in the Phoenician sites of the Mediterranean area, in the domestic contexts where they are used for the preparation and cooking of food, in the public, sacra and funeral contexts where the impasto ware is connected to special social and cultural meanings. A chronological system allows to analyse and to recognize the different productions between the end of the 2th millennium and the begin of the 1th millennium BC in the Mediterranean area, starting from the productions spread in the Levantine area. Some groups of IW can be identified during the early Phoenician presence in the Western Mediterranean area, since the end of the 9th century BC, and later since the end of the 8th and during the 7th century BC. In particular, the impasto ware is well attested in the earlier strata of the Phoenician inhabited centres, when various ethnics groups, Phoenician and local communities, lived together.

order to identify and share information about the features of this class. Analyses of the vases section,
of the shapes and diameters, and their technological features clarify the function (food preparation and
cooking) and the production (primarly domestic and household) of IW. Some ethnographic parallels
allow to define why the pottery-making process of IW was being preserved in a long period in the
community of Motya.

The analysis includes some productions spread in Sicily since the end of 8th to the 4th century BC, both in Phoenician and Indigenous contexts in Sicily. A wide documentation of IW is traced between the second half of the 7th and throughout the 6th century BC. The morphological classification of the repertoires, still in progress, is being carried out through a database, identifying also the technological technics. The IW production contributes to the knowledge about the interaction between Phoenicians and the indigenous communities.
