AIM. Blood transfusion is a common practice in pediatrics, especially in malaria-endemic areas. This is the method par-excellence of management for severe anemia. However, even after transfusion, some children will die. Our objective was to investigate the determinants of these deaths in order to propose appropriate solutions. METHODS. We conducted a cross-sectional and analytical study of children aged 3 to 59 months transfused at the Mother and Child Center of Chantal Biya Foundation (MCC/CBF) and Yaounde Teaching Hospital (YTH) from 1 January 2009 to 29 February 2012. The data was collected from hospital registers and the medical records of the patients. They concerned the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients, their therapeutic itineraries and treatment outcome. RESULTS. Four hundred children aged 3 months to 5 years were transfused including 146 at the YTH and 254 at the MCC/CBF. One hundred and two children died after transfusion, giving a post-transfusion fatality ...

ABSTRACT Aneurysm of the thoracic Aorta during Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is rare. We report the case of a 40 years old Cameroonian patient who presented at the emergency department of General Hospital of Yaounde with severe chest pain and fever two weeks before consultation. Raised D dim...

We report two cases of ectopia cordis in two children aged one day and twenty months respectively. A one day old newborn had complete thoracic ectopia cordis associated with an internal cardiac defect and severe thoracic and abdominal wall malformations. Our centre does not have the facilities to manage complex congenital defects and prior to being transferred to a cardiac centre, the neonate died on the second day of admission. A 20-month old baby had partial ectopia of the heart and a defect in the abdominal wall. He had no major congenital cardiac defect and has remained clinically stable with no life threatening symptoms.

Background: Although a blood genetic disease, sickle cell disease (SCD) leads to a chronic vasculopathy with multiple organ involvement. We assessed arterial stiffness in SCD patients and looked for associations between arterial stiffness and SCD-related vascular complications. Methods: The CADRE (Coeur Artères et Drepanocytose, ie, Heart Arteries and Sickle Cell Disease) study prospectively recruited pediatric and adult SCD patients and healthy controls in Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Mali, and Senegal. Patients underwent clinical examination, routine laboratory tests (complete blood count, serum creatinine level), urine albumin/creatinine ratio measure, and a measure of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) and augmentation index (AI) at a steady state. The clinical and biological correlates of cf-PWV and AI were investigated by using a multivariable multilevel linear regression analysis with individuals nested in families further nested in countries. Results: Included wer...

Burkitt lymphoma is a non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is endemic in the Equatorial Belt of Africa, usually affecting children and adolescents with primary head-neck or abdominal involvement. Primary cardiac lymphomas are rare entities (1.3% of all primary cardiac tumors) of difficult clinical identification. Delayed discovery contributes to significant mortality. We report a case of a primitive Burkitt lymphoma in a 14-year-old Cameroonian immunocompetent child, presenting with signs and symptoms of severe right inflow impairment. Echocardiography revealed a right atrial mass involving the right atrial ventricular junction. Surgical excision and chemotherapy regimens, administered according to established protocols, were effective in inducing complete remission at 6 months.
