The two first studies are of between subjects designs. Participants select the most relevant life change event during the last years and answer a brief version of Corsini’s basic beliefs related to emotional events and a short version of Tedeschi and Calhouns’s Post Traumatic growth inventory. The third study asks subjects to respond to the most important positive and negative recent life events. The three studies show that positive events reinforce positive basic beliefs much more than negative events undermine them. It was found that negative events transform these beliefs from positive to neutral. On the other hand, positive events transform them from positive into highly positive. Positive changes in basic beliefs are congruently associated with personal growth in both positive and negative valenced events. Negative changes were associated to personal growth only in the case of negative extreme life-change events. Studies upport the role of the alteration of basic beliefs as a driver of post-stress growth, but also show an inverted asymmetric effect: positive valenced events and cognitive changes are more important than negative ones for wellbeing.

Effect sizes of the association between affect strategies and affect balance or emotional well-being were estimated using five meta-analyses. The synthesis of these meta-analyses suggests that the functional strategies in auto- and hetero-regulation that help to enhance mood, increase positive affects, and decrease negative affects include problem-directed action, seeking emotional social support, distraction and acceptance, reappraisal, active physiological regulation, and regulated emotional expression. Dysfunctional strategies include withdrawal, social isolation, wishful thinking, negative reevaluation, rumination, emotional suppression, venting and confrontation. Rumination is functional in some studies, being associated with reevaluation. Confrontation is sometimes adaptive, being associated with regulated expression and assertiveness.

High and low positive affect was induced by asking subjects to write three poems Haikus about high (N = 28) and low positive connotation stimuli (N = 28). Then people wrote about their more intense infatuation experience and answered a scale on the emotions felt when writing the text, a measure of personal growth or benefits, and a measure of achievement of adaptive goals after the episode. In high positive affect condition was reported more positive and less negative emotions in recounting the experience, more personal growth and a better adjustment. Last poem and narration of experience were evaluated as more original in high positive condition by independent judges. A mediational analysis showed that positive emotions explain partially the influence of the manipulation on personal growth and perceived adjustment.

Reliabilities were satisfactory for all the scales, expected dimensions were found in an exploratory factorial analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis found that theoretical dimensions fit well the data. Construct validity was confirmed since modification of situation, reevaluation, low suppression, and emotional expression were related to MSCEIT's management of emotions subscale, and to emotional creativity and adaptive forms of self-regulation. Results are discussed with regard to interpersonal regulation and implications for a positive emotional climate at work.
