This Forum gathers a group of scholars in philosophy, political science, international relations and legal studies to reflect on the actuality of Benjamin’s essay for contemporary critical theory. Melany Cruz, Kaveh Ghoreishi and Sara Minelli engage Benjamin on ‘divine violence.’ As Cruz notes, lynching in contemporary Mexico has become a recurrent phenomenon in nota roja outlets. Due to its brutality, perceptions of lynching have been reduced to a form of uncivilised and irrational crime. In opposition to this perspective, Cruz theorises the political dimension of the violence of lynching by drawing from Benjamin and argues that such violence symbolically and affectively dramatises the suspension of ‘mere life’ in which the communities enacting the lynchings are immersed in the current cond...

This book is highly recommended by Melany Cruz for persuasively showing how notions of sovereignty can be used to align justice, human rights and democracy with political violence in its physical, symbolic and structural forms.

This book is highly recommended by Melany Cruz in showing the relationship between epistemological thinking, the practice of anthropology and its interactions with individuals and society.

Rather than focusing on DT’s points of strength such as ‘contingency and constructedness’ (chapter 7), the book also explores its weaknesses and even seeks to supplement them with stronger theories such as Bourdieu’s ‘habitus’ (chapter 6). Furthermore, testing the synthesis of this cross-fertilisation, the book includes methodological application of the New Media and the ‘liquid citizens’, a process accordingly recommended within a ‘radical contextualisation’ (chapter 8). The volume also includes an original analysis of the 2009 UK MPs’ expenses scandal in the popular press through the psycho-analyticallyinflicted Lacanian tools of ‘enjoyment’ and ‘fantasy’, albeit the argument still needs further integration within the overarching DT assumptions taken as the point of departure throughout the book. In addition, part of the contents in the concluding chapter 10, such as the historical overview of CMP, is introductory and would best fit within the first chapter.

It is our contention that methodol- ogy – whether positivist or post-positivist – is a form of knowing predicated upon the severance of theory from practice. Methodology presents these as distinct areas, which can only be unified through the synthetic operations of methodological approaches. We argue that the consequence of the separation of theory and practice is that the realm of practice is construed as raw material – as data – to be harvested in the research process, whilst theory is seen as detached from geohistorical–political relations. This serves a neo-colonial process of academic extractivism. We will demonstrate how this is so through an examination of popular methodological textbooks and approaches, highlighting the absence of considerations of contemporary coloniality. We then set out a tentative pedagogical alternative in the form of practical reflexivity and dialogical research. We will show how such approaches are emergent within the social sciences and how they offer a decolonial alternative to contemporary methodological approaches.
