The aim of this study was to compare frequency of pressure sores between malnourished and non-malnourished necropsied adults. METHOD: All (n = 201) adults (age ³ 18 years) autopsied between 1986 and 1996 at the Teaching Hospital of Triangulo Mineiro Medical School (Uberaba) were eligible for the study. Gender, race, weight, height and main diagnoses were recorded. Ninety-six cases were excluded because of probable body water retention (congestive heart failure, hepatic insufficiency, nephrotic syndrome) or pressure sores secondary to peripheral vascular ischemia. Body mass index (BMI) was used to define malnourished (BMI < 18.5 kg/m²) and non-malnourished (BMI > 18.5kg/m²) groups. RESULTS: Except for weight (42.5kg; range: 28-57 vs. 60; 36-134.5kg) and BMI (16.9; range: ...

It was carried out a 24 h recall and a food frequency survey in 31 constipated women and compared the results with a control of 31 women without constipation. Their mean daily crude fiber intake were no statistical different (2.33 +/- 1.4 vs 2.17 +/- 0.9 g/day), but the usual intake of fruits and vegetables of the constipated ones were irregular. These results call the attention for the influence of the kind and schedule of the food rich fiber intake on the intestinal habit.

The study was conducted on 81 patients, 73 males and eight females. Zinc parameters were compared with those of 84 individuals with no apparent disease aged 23-45 years. Plasma zinc levels were lower in patients with pellagra than in the controls (P &amp;lt; 0.01). The results of the zinc tolerance test showed that: (1) basal zinc levels were 69.7 +/- 16.8 micrograms/100 ml in pellagrins and 82.3 +/- 34.0 micrograms/100 ml in the controls (P &amp;lt; 0.01); (2) after 1 h the increase in plasma levels was similar in the pellagrin and control groups; (3) during the second hour the increase was more marked in the controls (P &amp;lt; 0.01), and the same was observed during the third and fourth hours (P &amp;lt; 0.05). Urinary zinc excretion (mg/24 h) was higher in pellagrins (P &amp;lt; 0.01). Zinc concentration in hair and toenails did not differ between pellagrins and controls. We conclude that pellagrins present zinc deficiency as demonstrated by plasma and urine zinc levels and by their abnormal response to the zinc tolerance test. We suggest that hair and nail zinc levels should not be used to assess zinc nutritional status in patients with pellagra.

All of the autopsied adults (n = 175; age > 18 years) with complete records, including weight and height data, were included. Pneumonitis was observed more frequently in malnourished individuals (59.1%) than in non-malnourished individuals (41.3%). This study showed that the percentage of pneumonitis among autopsied adults was high, in addition to an increased risk of pneumonitis among these individuals.

Its incidence is increasing among Brazilian adults, including those living in rural areas. Our aim was not only to describe the frequency of MetS in adults with or without MetS but also to compare their food intake pattern as assessed by the healthy eating index (HEI) and serum albumin and C reactive protein (CRP) levels. METHODS: Men and women (n = 246) living in a small village in Brazil were included. MetS was characterized according to the adult treatment panel (ATP III) criteria. Groups were compared by chi-square, student t or Mann-Whitney tests. RESULTS: MetS was diagnosed in 15.4% of the cases. The MetS group showed higher CRP (1.8±1.2 vs. 1.0±0.9 mg/dl) and lower albumin (4.3±0.3 vs. 4.4±0.3 g/dl) serum levels compared to the control group. Additionally, the MetS group showed lower scores (median[range]) in the HEI compared ...
