Barrington’s model was used to identify selection criteria used to identify potentially effective supplier development schemes. An initial hypothesis was that comparisons between less and more successful performing schemes should correlate to Barrington’s model. Companies were selected on the basis of Barrington’s continuum that has been supported by the UK Institute of Personnel and Development: systematic approach, appraisal approach and the creation of positive attitudes for continuous improvement. Three company improvement programmes were compared and contrasted with an Institute of Personnel and Development three-attribute model – systematic approach, appraisal approach and an attitude to continuous improvement by Barrington. The research suggested that supplier development described in the literature rely on the least effective of these – a systematic approach. Empirical results lead to conclusions th...

Reuben and Rose Mattus created the Haagen-Dazs brand of ice cream in 1961 in Brooklyn, NY. Since Denmark had a strong reputation for dairy products at that time, the name Haagen-Dazs was invented by the Mattuses composed of two made-up words that gave the brand Scandinavian mystique. The company began with just the three basic ice cream flavors—chocolate, vanilla and coffee. The company rapidly adopted the franchise model of business to grow exponentially throughout the 1970s. This enabled the corporation to multiply the number of flavors and expand the portfolio of retail outlets without the capital investment or risk. Since then, ownership of Haagen-Dazs Company has changed several times. The company was first acquired by Pillsbury in 1983, and then by General Mills when it acquired Pillsbury in 2001.

Focus of the analysis is on direct materials and transport costs. A quantitative simulation tool was developed from in-depth work to identify and quantify inbound and outbound logistics metrics. Effects of the material costs, safety stock requirements and transport cost were identified. The simulation tool is essentially generic and applicable to a wide range of industries. Results obtained from this work support the validity of generic strategic guidelines for logistics and supply chain development that are core to the lean and agile paradigm. Since small and medium sized enterprises can develop in partnership on a global basis with their customers, such an analysis is of use in understanding their customer's strategic objectives.
