Polyuria/polydipsia, sporadic vomiting and weight loss were also mentioned by the owners. Distension of the cranial abdomen was observed on admission, and two smooth masses were palpated in the abdomen. Mild anemia and azotemia were detected on hematological and biochemical testing. Plain lateral and dorsoventral radiographic views of the abdomen were compatible with renomegaly. Ultrasonography revealed the presence of fluid surrounding both kidneys, and analysis of the accumulated fluid confirmed the diagnosis of bilateral subcapsular transudative perinephric (perirenal) pseudocysts. The precise etiology of pseudocysts formation in our cat could not be identified. Emphasis is placed on their development, due to the coexisting chronic kidney disease, but also to other causes. Although surgical or laparoscopical resection of the cyst wall is generally recommended, owners of ...

These mushrooms are edible for humans and highly prized in various cuisines. Vomiting, hypersalivation, horizontal head oscillation and limb muscle tremor were developed within 6 hours. Two days later the cat was admitted due to depression and anorexia, while the neurologic signs had subsided. Dehydration, depression, lymphopenia, increased serum urea nitrogen concentration, proteinuria and bilirubinuria were detected. During the 5-day-hospitalisation period, treatment comprised of intravenous fluids, and per os vitamin E and hepatoprotectants (SAMe – vitamin E – vitamin C – silibinin complex). Due to mucohaemorrhagic diarrhoea present on the first day of hospitalisation, ampicillin and sucralfate were subsequently added. The kitten recovered completely a week later and was still healthy 8 months later. Mushrooms in general, are classified...

In a multivariate model adjusted for age and gender, the presence of atopic dermatitis or eczema was the only independent predictor of nasal Saureuscarriage (odds ratio [OR], 4.4; 95% confidence interval [CI95], 1.2-16.0;P=.02). The only other participant characteristic associated with nasalS aureuscarriage was immunotherapy with allergen injections (OR, 1.98; CI95, 0.7-6.0), but this association did not reach statistical significance...

It causes hemodynamic filtration and excretory failure of the kidneys, which leads to metabolic toxin accumulation and dysregulation of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance, as well as inability of the kidneys to excrete and respond to various hormones. Main laboratory findings of CRI are the increased concentration of urea and creatinine in serum. Serum creatinine is the principle factor for staging the disease. Four stages arerecognized. In addition, substaging uses two other diagnostic parameters, including borderline or severe proteinuria and/or systemic hypertension, which are considered among the risk factors of renal injury progression. These parameters determine therapy strategies and prognosis of the disease. Management is mainly conservative and is focused on improving the quality o...

Clinical and detailed ophthalmic examination including intraocular pressure measurements were performed, along with radiographic and ultrasonographic examination. In all animals retrobulbar masses were diagnosed forcing the globe to protrude. Teeth malocclusion was also noticed in most of the animals. Surgical intervention under general anaesthesia, included abscess drainage, flushing and teeth removal. During surgery, samples for bacterial culture and cytology exanimation were obtained. Pasteurella multocida, Staphylococcus spp and Pseudomonas spp were isolated, while cytology confirmed the clinical diagnosis of abscess formation. Surgical management resulted in retropulsion of ocular bulbi and infection elimination. Marsupialization of the abscesses facilitated flushing and topical antibiotic application postop...

Antibodies were detected in 110 (12·9%) dogs. The highest seroprevalence (4·9%) was to the proposed novel serovar Altodouro belonging to the Pomona serogroup. This serovar also showed a statistically significant association with clinical disease. Serovar Bratislava antibodies were found in 3·4% of sera. Consideration should be given to the inclusion of serovars belonging to the Pomona serogroup and serovar Bratislava in future dog vaccines for the Greek market.

Thoracic radiographs showed increased opacity of all of the left lung lobes. Upon bronchoscopy, a sanguineous, purulent discharge was detected in the tracheal lumen with hyperplastic tissue narrowing the left main stem bronchus. Cultures were positive for bacteria (Bacillus spp. and Clostridium spp.) but negative for fungi. Due to the severity of the lesions, a complete left lung pneumonectomy was performed. Histopathological examination of the excised lung tissues revealed a severe granulomatous bronchopneumonia with numerous alveolar macrophages laden with structures stained positively by periodic acid-Schiff and Grocott stain that had morphology consistent with fungi. PCR and sequencing of internal transcribed spacer regions 1 and 2 from genetic material extracted from paraffin-embedded pulmonary tissue confirmed the presence of Aspergillus fumigatus. Itraconazole was administrated for 5.5 mo and the dog was clinically normal 26 mo after surgery.
