Darla White
Darla White is a marine scientist and research diver with over 17 years of experience in fish and habitat monitoring and question-driven research in coral reef environments, and a decade of working in fisheries management with the Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) on Maui. Her position with DAR included partnering on numerous marine research projects and planning efforts with County, State, and Federal agencies, NGOs, University researchers, and communities. A significant aspect of her position was communicating the science to decision makers and communities. She has specialized training in managing for Reef Resilience and Climate Smart Scenario planning. Darla served as a member of the Maui Coral Reef Recovery Team and the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, as well as co-coordinator for Ka‘anapali Makai Watch and the West Maui Kumuwai Campaign. She also served as the Maui Island Coordinator for Eyes of the Reef, and led a citizen science monitoring project for five years. Darla has been at sea on several NOAA research cruises as both a Fish and Benthic scientist, and has also taught classes in Coral Reef Biology and Oceanography at University of Hawai‘i, Maui College. She has a bachelor degree in Marine Science and a Master of Science (MSc) in Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science, both from the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. She recently completed a Masters Certificate in GIS at Oregon State University.
