First, a model of technology transfer which subdivides this complicated activity into several small and more readily understandable dimensions is developed. Next, questions relevant to each dimension from the perspective of both the university administrator and the university researcher are asked. Answers to the questions explored are drawn from results of a survey of administrators and researchers associated with the top 100 US research universities.

It begins with a general explanation of fracking and its general impacts along with specifics of the Eagle Ford Shale region. Drawing on data gathered both from crash trends and two surveys administered to public officials in the Eagle Ford Shale region, we present a description of the impacts of fracking on cities and counties. Crash trends between 2009-2013 overall show a 26 percent increase. Fatalities and severe injuries also increased by 49 percent. The survey results show that counties and cities are experiencing significant challenges in meeting increased demands placed on their transportation system by fracking including increased traffic and congestion, deteriorating roads, and increased cost of maintenance. Keywords: fracking, transportation policy, energy resources, rural traffic, oil -...

These factors are (a) the degree of environmental difficulty, (b) stakeholder relationships, (c) organizational transformation, and (d) politics. The Fernald, Ohio, site is then presented as a case that reveals the importance of these factors in explaining a site’s successful progress toward environmental compliance. There are two outstanding features of the Fernald cleanup effort: (a) the extent to which the site has been able to work effectively with stakeholders and (b) the comprehensiveness of the site’s successful organizational transformation.

Formidable barriers, that act to thwart the use of university-based science and technology for industrial innovation, are believed to exist. Understanding and overcoming these obstacles is on the agenda of university administrators, researchers, the business community, and the government. Drawing on data gathered through site visits and personal interviews, this paper explores, from the perspective of business firms, how they perceive their interactions with universities. In particular, it explores how companies define ‘successful’ university-firm research relationships, what barriers to university-partnering firms report, and what the costs and the benefits are of engaging in university collaborations. Finally, a typology of four firm types will be suggested. Each of these f...

Framing the scientific debate against moral, ethical, and religious considerations, the book offers potential solutions. It features seven maps and tables, index, bibliography, and notes.

The weapons that fought the Cold War, the facilities that manufactured those weapons, and the factories that fueled a prosperous economy left behind a trail of pollution. Seven previously unpublished essays examine the problem of toxic waste in the United States, what is being done about it, and what should be done about it. W. Henry Lambright and Agnes Gereben Schaefer, Dianne Rahm, Sevim Ahmedov, Charles Davis, Robert A. Simons and Kimberly Winson, Santa Falcone, and Toddi A. Steelman and JoAnn Carmin write about such issues as community based environmental management, regional EPA offices and the regulation of hazardous wastes, "brownfields," nuclear and chemical weapons destruction, environmental contamination and the nuclear weapons complex, the privatization of nuclear waste clean-up, and WIPP, Yucca, and hazardous waste transport. The future of humanity demands careful thought about these matters.
