Enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering path at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in 1967. Transferred to the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) in 1968. Won a B.A. degree in Anthropology and a NAUI Instructor's license in 1970. Participated in the Earthwatch archaeological survey of Ancient Gythion, Greece in 1972. Graduated UNC in 1977 with an M.A. in Anthropology specializing in Archaeology. Thesis topic: "Fluctuations in Sea Level in Late Pleistocene Times and the Archaeological Potential of the Bering-Chukchi Platform". Taught SCUBA diving for the UNC Department of Physical Education 1975-1977. Taught SCUBA diving to Turkish University students working for the American Institute of Nautical Archaeology excavating the Seytan Deresi shipwreck site in 1975. Participated in the Institute of Nautical Archaeology's excavation of the "Cornwallis Cave Wreck in the York River, Virginia in 1976 and joined INA as a Research Associate 1977-1989. Enrolled at Texas A&M University in 1977, graduated with a PhD in Geography in 1987. Member, Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology 1980-1990. Co-founded Ships of Exploration and Discovery Research (Ships of Discovery) in 1989.edit
