O presente texto procura estabelecer uma relação causal entre a história do pensamento econômico e a imperiosa necessidade de remunerar os serviços ambientais, de taxar a utilização do capital natural e também de explicar a adoção tardia dessas medidas. Pretende também mostrar a necessidade de associar os pagamentos pelos serviços ambientais, uma premiação pela proteção da natureza, à remuneração do capital natural, mecanismo de desestímulo às ações que venham comprometer o meio ambiente. A metodologia utilizada foi a revisão bibliográfica. Na sua elaboração, como abordagem, procedeu-se uma incursão nos fundamentos da história do pensamento econômico buscando identificar as raízes do reconhecimento do papel da natureza nessa área. [<a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0145276#pone.0145276.ref026" target="_blank">26</a>].
