Insurgent activities are so prevalent in Nigeria that the security apparatus finds it very difficult if no almost impossible to curb their excesses. On a daily basis, newspapers are flooded with the wanton destruction of the activities of these elements in the Nigerian society. The headlines of those media reports are therefore selected for analysis in this study. In this study, we draw samples of data, present and group them into number texts and then give a detailed analysis through the application of linguistic tools. We focus the analysis on identifying the linguistic and discourse patterns in the data by using conceptualization and representation as Critical Discourse Analytical and Metaphorical concepts to critically examine the issues in relation to insurgency. Ideological projections are also taken into consideration from both the media practitioners’ perspectives and the militants’ points of view. For easy identification, the data were arranged in terms of their thematic re...

On the 24th of February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a war that has drawn widespread condemnations, criticisms, and reactions from world leaders. While an infinitesimal figure has spoken in support of the invasion, most world leaders have outrightly condemned the action of the Russian government led by Vladimir Putin who in the process of justifying his actions, claims that the reason for the invasion was to “de-nazify” the Ukrainian government policies. Ironically, Putin himself is a product of Nazism, a system of government that he strongly supported in his prime. Moreso, in the days of the USSR, the Russian government had been accused of the same offense the Russian government is accusing Ukraine of. Therefore, this is a clear case of linguistic labeling embellished in the exercise of power as a justification for the activity carried out by a more superior force. The theoretical framework of CDA was adopted in this study because it focuses squarely on the projection of ideolog...

The Niger Delta environment especially the Ogoni area has been a subject of debate from the time oil was discovered in the area in 1958. The land has been enamoured by hostilities, kidnappings, killings and criminalities as a result of the inhuman activities of the federal government, the multinational oil corporations and the host communities. These activities arise from the level of environmental degradation carried out by the oil explorers. The murder of environmental and human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa in 1995 climaxed the hostilities in Ogoniland. The focus of this study is to critically examine thee reports from oil explorations in Ogoniland from the perspective of language by applying the theoretical principles of EcoCritical Discourse Analysis to explicate the discourses raised. Eco-Critical Discourse Analysis as a theoretical model in this study because it deals with the application of Critical Discourse Analysis to texts about the environment and environmentalism, in o...

The paper explicates the pattern of propaganda rhetoric in the media to enact and represent the prevalent realities of the Boko Haram crises in Nigeria by examining and analysing the responses, reactions and the utterances by the major actors in the raging insurgency war. The security outfits have been dishing out press reports on the "death" of the leader of the Boko Haram sect only for the same leader to resurface and counter the report and show proof of his existence. This paper therefore examines the patterns of discourses that have emerged from those utterances by the major actors in the crises from the perspective of counterpropaganda rhetoric. Data were generated from two Nigerian print media outfits-The Guardian and The Sun Newspapers while the theoretical concepts of promises and persuasion as sub-genres of propaganda served as analytical parameters.

Militancy is a global phenomenon. In Nigeria, militants have been given various names that have been highly contested, along political, social and religious lines. Ranging from the Niger Delta Militants (henceforth NDM) to the Boko Haram Insurgents (henceforth BHI), the issue of linguistic labeling in the media in relation to militants activities has been a serious one. Amidst these competing voices, there is the need to critically evaluate the various labels associated with militants as seen in the media. Through the application of the Socio-Political Approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (henceforth CDA), as espoused by Allan Bells, this paper explicates the growing importance of CDA and its socio-political concern to revealing inequalities of power as a standard approach to media texts. This approach to CDA tends to link text analysis of news stories to media production processes and the role of the audience and opines that Critical Discourse analysts are interested in both det...
