Parte de la interpretación straussiana de Maquiavelo y no entra a discutir su corrección. Se contraponen dos modos de entender dicha relación: el straussiano, en el que la Verdad debe ser accesible solo a unos pocos, y el republicano, para el que la Verdad debe ser accesible a todos.

Furthermore, I will argue that the «empresas politicas» devoted to economic issues must be interpreted from a mercantilist point of view.
El memorial de Jose de Campillo ha sido considerado tradicionalmente como parte del mercantilismo... more El memorial de Jose de Campillo ha sido considerado tradicionalmente como parte del mercantilismo colbertiano. Pero parece una caracterizacion insuficiente. Arcila, moderno editor del Nuevo sistema, insiste con vehemencia en esta cuestion, pues, para el, el trabajo de Campillo es el revulsivo teorico que fructificara algunos anos mas tarde en un conjunto de importantes cambios en la politica americana, que da paso a una nueva epoca en las relaciones entre Espana y sus dominios americanos, contribuyendo, ademas, a dibujar lo que serian los futuros estados independientes.
Resumen/Abstract El liberalismo no puede reducirse a una tipología de partido, a una moral o a un... more Resumen/Abstract El liberalismo no puede reducirse a una tipología de partido, a una moral o a una ideología. No está vinculado necesariamente a una teoría económica, ni tiene por bandera el individualismo. El liberalismo es una cultura política y este libro analiza su pasado, su presente y su futuro. En primer lugar, presenta su historia a partir de sus hitos conceptuales y figuras más destacadas (Locke, Smith, Tocqueville, Mill, Berlin, Hayek, etc.), distingue entre el liberalismo clásico y el anti-estatalista y añade un apartado sobre la especificidad del liberalismo en España. En segundo lugar, mantiene que ninguno de ellos da respuestas a los problemas de nuestro tiempo y que la cultura política liberal debe repensar sus relaciones con la democracia, la justicia y la comunidad política. Para ello define un tercer tipo de liberalismo que pueda dar cuenta de los retos de nuestro tiempo. No olvida el libro, por último, analizar cuáles son los viejos y nuevos enemigos de la libertad y cuáles son los rasgos que cabe considerar afines a un individuo liberal.

Este artículo presenta una defensa del liberalismo como cultura política frente a distintas corri... more Este artículo presenta una defensa del liberalismo como cultura política frente a distintas corrientes muy influyentes del pensamiento contemporáneo que han pretendido, con razonable éxito, desacreditarlo. Se argumenta a favor de una concepción del liberalismo que es compatible con la existencia del Estado. Se analiza la relación del liberalismo con la idea de nación y se concluye afirmando que el liberalismo es la respuesta política más adecuada a una sociedad globalizada y a los nuevos retos sociales, políticos y económicos que se le plantean.

El espectador de la belleza que emite el juicio estético se convierte en espectador de los asuntos humanos que emite juicios políticos. Pero así como el papel del creador y el del espectador son diferentes, también lo son el de quien realiza la acción política y quien la juzga. Ello produce una escisión entre ética y política que parece insoslayable desde la filosofía kantiana. La tesis que vamos a defender es que Arendt no comprende adecuadamente el papel del conflicto para generar orden y vincular reglas universales con acciones particulares.

No hay nadie que reniegue de ella o que no afirme querer defenderla. Pero tal éxito es compatible con que no nos pongamos de acuerdo sobre a qué nos referimos cuando hablamos de democracia. Como estamos viendo, también es compatible con la degradación de la vida pública y con el cuestionamiento de las instituciones y procesos que la encarnan. En ocasiones, la idea de democracia que se propugna se contradice con otros valores, o está sostenida en tópicos vacíos, prejuicios y mitos. Se olvida su carácter político, histórico y conflictivo. Las consecuencias pueden ser varias y peligrosas: desde el desinterés por la política hasta, en el extremo opuesto, la inflación populista de ella. Este excelente libro de Alfonso Galindo y Enrique Ujaldón-filósofos, especialistas en pensamiento político-analiza diez mitos de la democracia que corren el riesgo de convertirse en dogmas excluyentes: los de pueblo, participación, privado-público, derecha-izquierda, libertad, igualdad, entre otros. Mitos que defendemos, que hacemos nuestros, cruciales para la forma de vida política más valiosa que poseemos. Pero es preciso no olvidar su carácter de mitos, es decir, de creencias y rituales contingentes y revisables, para que el brillo falso no nos deslumbre y aprendamos a diferenciar la mena de la ganga. Analizar los peligros que encierran los principales mitos que sostienen la democracia y, a la vez, son sostenidos por ella, se antoja necesario porque engloban riesgos que, si permanecen impensados, pueden arruinar y sofocar su valor, convirtiendo lo que puede ser precioso en terrorífico. Sólo una sociedad que no se abandone a la inercia de asumir acríticamente mitos convertidos en dogma, evitará la demagogia populista y mantendrá viva la conciencia del carácter constituyente y abierto de la democracia.
