Health institutions aim to always improve. The introduction of Quality management systems at Chitungwiza district has mandated government hospitals to provide quality health care which is affordable to the community at large. This paper seeks to analyse the quality of health services being delivered at Chitungwiza district. Through purposive sampling, the research sampled 100 participants who responded to the questionnaires and also made use of interviews to health officials and patients. Results show that Chitungwiza district is failing to provide quality health and is failing to meet patient expectations. The healthcare staff also concurred with patients that the healthcare system in Chitungwiza district has numerous healthcare challenges. The healthcare delivery challenges being experienced which detrimentally impacts on quality of healthcare are poor record-keeping, poor infe...

One area of concern is the spatial inequality in levels of socioeconomic development between regions within the country. In this paper, the spatial pattern of socioeconomic development in Zimbabwe is analysed and the administrative districts are ranked from highest to lowest according to levels of socioeconomic developments. Both primary and secondary data were used to collect data on thirteen indicators of development. The data were analysed using the geometric mean method. The analysis of data revealed that certain areas in Zimbabwe have relatively high levels of development while others have low levels of development or no development at all. Article visualizations:

Currently, university students in Zimbabwe face a number of challenges in accessing appropriate contraceptives. Three hundred (300) survey questionnaires were distributed to both female and male students at Zimbabwean state universities for data gathering. Thirty three (33) questionnaires were distributed and completed at eight state universities while thirty six (36) were completed at the University of Zimbabwe (the biggest university in the country). It emerged from the study that there are quite a number of factors that inhibit access to desired contraceptive methods by the students in Zimbabwe. Determinants of choice of contraceptives used by university students in Zimbabwe and perceptions and attitudes of the students towards accessing of contraception were also assessed. This study reveals that these challenges range from the side effects of t...

The mixed methods design was employed in gathering and analysing primary data, involving a household questionnaire, interviews and group discussions. The results of the study indicated poor accessibility to community services by residents in both study sites, poor quality of the accessed services, and a glaring need for the improvement of the services. Comparatively, while services accessibility was better in the communal area, the quality of such services seemed to be slightly better in the resettlement area. The study results highlight a continuing lag in service delivery in the rural ar...

The disparities in development are largely determined by the spatial inequalities in the distribution of major determinants of development. To determine variability of development among districts in Midlands province, eleven indicator variables of development where used. The composite index method was used to integrate the development indicator values of the variables into a single measure so that development could be measured and compared numerically. This enabled the districts to be ranked according to their levels of development from top to bottom to create a visual and statistical display of the spatial patterns of development in the province. Major sources of data for the study were the Ministry of Health and Child welfare (2014) and ZIMSTAT (2014). It emerged from the study that there is severe spatial development inequalities across administrative districts in Midlands...

There is an increase of rural women’s participation in economic activities to reduce poverty. The persistence of drought and economic collapse in Zimbabwe influenced the increased participation of rural women in productive activities. Rural women have become breadwinners in most households and have since adopted various livelihood activities to survive. These livelihoods should be able to cater for their daily household needs. A case study design was employed in this study. The study used questionnaires and semi-structured interviews as data collecting instruments. Livelihood activities found included seasonal farming, gardening, and money saving schemes, informal trading, and informal trading. Challenges faced contained within, persistent droughts, economic crisis, lack of economic opportunities, poor access to productive resources, e...

The study sought to assess access to safe water and sanitation in a resettlement area in Zimbabwe. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to collect primary data. The study revealed a precarious, and unacceptable, situation regarding access to safe water and adequate sanitation in the study area. 74% of study respondents lacked access to safe water, while 57.3% had no toilet facility at their homesteads. The results of the study highlight the general poor state of service provision in the country’s resettlement areas, largely due to a poorly planned and politicized resettlement programme; in addition to highlighting the drastic demise of water and sanitation infrastructure in the country following economic decline and political isolation since the turn of the century, as most of the country’s wate...

The study sought to assess water demand management strategies in the City of Masvingo in south-eastern Zimbabwe, and suggests some options towards a more effective demand management regime. The need for water demand management in Masvingo City arises due to water supply challenges that have further been compounded by rapidly growing demand. A household questionnaire, structured interviews and observation were the tools used in collecting data for the study. Descriptive statistics were used in analysing quantitative data gathered through the questionnaire, while qualitative data were analysed thematically. The magnitude of the problem is more severe in developing countries than in developed countries. Zimbabwe, as a developing country, is no exception and the country is characterized by severe regional inequalities. This research is concerned with the spatial patterns of socio-economic development in Zimbabwe. The composite index method was used to rank administrative districts of Zimbabwe according to level of development. The composite indices together with socio-economic characteristics were used to demarcate the administrative districts into development regions according to Friedmann’s (1966) model. Attention was given to the spatial development policies applied in Zimbabwe. Friedmann’s (1966) guidelines, for the development of the different regional types in his model, were applied to the Zimbabwean spatial economy. Suggestions were made regarding possible adjustments to p...

They range from inadequacy of human and material health care resources, transport problems to long distances travelled by patients to access medical care. Based on the findings, a number of recommendations were suggested to mitigate the impact of the challenges.

The impacts can be both positive and negative. The current study sought to examine the socio-economic impacts of the construction of Tokwe Mukosi Dam to the surrounding communities. Research methods included key informant interviews and a questionnaire survey. The results from the study showed that Tokwe Mukosi Dam has both positive and negative impacts on communities around the dam. It emerged from the study that the positive socio-economic impacts of the construction of Tokwe Mukosi Dam included: increased availability of fish; water provision for livestock production, irrigation and domestic purposes; and tourism development and associated income enhancement. On the other end, there were also negative impacts of dam construction revealed by the current study including: drowning of people; attack of people and livestock by crocodiles; displacement of people; and increased inciden...
