On the whole the Jewish perspective has been neglected; the use of diaries is highly questionable; and 'The Jew' is mainly depicted as passive and obedient. Psychoanalytical or psychological factors as repression and suppression are explicitly rejected as useless.

In 2012-2014, the book by Van der Boom was the subject of intense debate in the Netherlands. In October 2012, a professional jury selected the book as best general-interest history book of the year. In December, our essay in De Groene Amsterdammer appeared and the debate was unleashed. This led to new publications in for instance De Groene Amsterdammer, the newspaper NRC Handelsblad and the Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad. This article introduces our findings to an English-reading public.
