Om een indruk te krijgen van het beeld dat lezers van grote kranten van moslima’s krijgen, hebben we de foto’s van gesluierde moslima’s in drie grote kranten (De Telegraaf, NRC, de Volkskrant) in de afgelopen twee decennia geanalyseerd. In totaal zijn er 2561 foto’s geanalyseerd.

Deze monitor is gebaseerd op uitgebreid literatuuronderzoek, twee enquetes en interviews met zes ... more Deze monitor is gebaseerd op uitgebreid literatuuronderzoek, twee enquetes en interviews met zes verschillende experts.
In de monitor worden cijfers weergegeven over ervaren discriminatie in Amsterdam en hoeveel meldingen er worden gedaan bij de politie en het Meldpunt Discriminatie Regio Amsterdam (MDRA).
Daarnaast is er in afzonderlijke hoofdstukken aandacht voor discriminatie op de arbeidsmarkt, in het onderwijs, op de woningmarkt en door de politie. Ieder hoofdstuk start met een situatieschets, daarna volgt een beschrijving wat in grote lijnen het beleid van de gemeente is en geven experts suggesties voor verbetering. Verder wordt een korte impressie gegeven van de actieonderzoeken die in opdracht van de gemeente Amsterdam zijn uitgevoerd naar anti-zwart racisme, antimoslimracisme, discriminatie van LHBTQI+ en antisemitisme.
Tot slot worden de resultaten beschreven van een enquête die onder 40 Amsterdamse maatschappelijke organisaties is gehouden.

According to the ANP image bank, the Dutch Muslim woman is veiled, passive, works as a cashier, and is mainly found on the street, at the market or shopping. Or rather that is the image that arises from the photographs that are labelled with the search term ‘Muslima’. The photographs paint a very one-sided picture, and the descriptions and search terms linked to the photographs contain keywords that often do not correspond with the content of the photographs. This contributes to the stereotyping and stigmatisation of Muslim women. Photographers are using these search terms for commercial reasons, to increase the findability of their photographs in the image database. These are the findings of research done by photographer Cigdem Yuksel and researcher Ewoud Butter.

Dit is wat er voornamelijk te zien is op de foto’s die verschijnen onder de zoekterm ‘moslima’. De foto’s zijn eenzijdig en de omschrijvingen en zoekwoorden bij de foto’s bevatten woorden en begrippen die vaak niet overeen komen met wat er feitelijk te zien is op de foto, maar die wel bijdragen aan stereotypering en stigmatisering van moslima’s. Fotografen gebruiken deze woorden uit commerciële overwegingen, om de vindbaarheid van hun foto te vergroten. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek dat ik heb gedaan met fotograaf Cigdem Yuksel.

Zij doen hun ervaringen op uiteenlopende plekken op, maar in het bijzonder op straat of de publieke ruimte, op de arbeidsmarkt, op internet, in winkels, op de markt, in het openbaar vervoer en in het onderwijs. Dat blijkt uit de verkennende studie ‘Utrecht is ook mijn stad!’ Cijfers en verhalen over discriminatie en stigmatisering van moslims in Utrecht die deze week is gepubliceerd. Het verkennende onderzoek werd in opdracht van de gemeente Utrecht uitgevoerd door de zelfstandige onderzoekers Jurriaan Omlo en Ewoud Butter. Het onderzoek bestond uit een survey, interviews en gesprekken met een klankbordgroep en een focusgroep.
De tevredenheid over de zorg op Internationale Schakelklassen (ISK’s) hangt sterk samen met de ma... more De tevredenheid over de zorg op Internationale Schakelklassen (ISK’s) hangt sterk samen met de mate waarin het lukt om nabijheid zo te organiseren dat problemen tijdig gesignaleerd kunnen worden en leerlingen het gevoel hebben dat ze gezien en gehoord worden wanneer ze daaraan behoefte hebben. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek dat ik samen met zelfstandig onderzoeker Eva Klooster heb gedaan en dat onlangs door LOWAN, een netwerkorganisatie die ondersteuning en advies geeft aan ISK-scholen, is gepubliceerd.
Er zijn in Nederland ongeveer 120 Internationale Schakelklassen (ISK’s), waar onderwijs wordt gegeven aan jongeren tussen 12 en 18 jaar die net in Nederland zijn of die het Nederlands niet of nauwelijks beheersen. Het gaat om leerlingen die alleen of met hun ouders naar Nederland zijn gevlucht, om kinderen van buitenlandse werknemers, maar ook om leerlingen die in het kader van gezinshereniging of -vorming naar Nederland zijn gekomen.
Behalve aan goed onderwijs hebben veel van deze leerlingen, die vaak de last dragen van een traumatisch verleden en zorgen over de toekomst, ook behoefte aan goede zorg. LOWAN en Pharos besloten daarom onderzoek te laten doen naar deze zorgbehoefte van ISK-leerlingen, de vragen en dilemma’s van ISK’s en enkele goede voorbeelden van zorgstructuren en handelswijzen.
Dit onderzoek is onlangs gepubliceerd op de website van LOWAN. Het onderzoek bestond uit interviews met ruim 50 medewerkers en leerlingen van ISK’s en uit een enquête die door 69 ISK’s werd ingevuld.
Eva Klooster en ik waren geregeld diep onder de indruk van de verhalen van de leerlingen (dappere jongeren, vaak met een fors traumatisch verleden), maar ook van de grote betrokkenheid en deskundigheid van sommige professionals die ieder op hun eigen wijze ‘nabijheid’ wisten te organiseren.

In veel gemeenten staat de maatschappelijke waarde van migrantenorganisaties ter discussie. De meeste organisaties zijn er zelf van overtuigd dat ze wel een maatschappelijke waarde hebben, maar ze kunnen deze waarde moeilijk omschrijven. Deze toolkit is bedoeld voor organisaties die aan hun omgeving, aan hun partners, aan hun achterban, aan de gemeente, aan bedrijven of aan fondsen willen duidelijk maken wat hun maatschappelijke waarde is. De toolkit kan daarnaast een middel zijn om eens kritisch naar de eigen organisatie te kijken en de maatschappelijke waarde te vergroten.
Ik heb deze handreiking samen met de immer aimabele, deskundige en te bescheiden Habib el Kaddou... more Ik heb deze handreiking samen met de immer aimabele, deskundige en te bescheiden Habib el Kaddouri geschreven op basis van onze eigen ervaring en die van het SMN en enkele betrokken partners. In het bijzonder hebben we gebruik gemaakt van ervaringen die zijn opgedaan in het kader van het project Weerbaarheid tegen Jihadistische Radicalisering, waarvoor het SMN onder andere 100 sleutelpersonen trainde en verspreid over het land 30 voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten organiseerde met lokale Marokkaans-Nederlandse organisaties. Totaal 1460 ouders bezochten deze bijeenkomsten.
De handreiking is primair voor Marokkaans-Nederlandse organisaties geschreven, maar ook beleidsmakers, professionals en vrijwilligers die voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten over radicalisering voor (Marokkaans-Nederlandse) ouders willen organiseren, kunnen er wat aan hebben.

Ook is er aandacht besteed aan de wijze waarop lokale overheden allochtone vrijwilligersorganisaties betrekken bij hun besluitvorming en wat daarbij succes- en faalfactoren zijn. Het zijn vragen die niet los kunnen worden gezien van (het verloop van) het integratiedebat de afgelopen jaren.

De nadruk ligt daarbij op de periode tussen 1990 en 2016. Naast literatuuronderzoek baseren wij ons op ongeveer 60 interviews en een kwart eeuw aan eigen ervaringen.
Onderwerpen die aan de orde komen zijn onder andere demografische ontwikkelingen, moskeeën, moskeekoepels, imams en imamopleidingen, islamitisch onderwijs, islamitische omroepen en andere media, islamitische politieke partijen en andere islamitische organisaties. We gaan uitgebreid in op de maatschappelijke en politieke context, het islamdebat en de effecten daarvan op de institutionalisering van de islam in Nederland. Ook staan we stil bij het langzaam verdwijnen van de eerste generatie bestuurders en de opkomst van een nieuwe generatie van in Nederland geboren en getogen moslims.

Hierin wordt niet alleen aandacht besteed aan de geschiedenis van 50 jaar migratie van Marokkaanse Nederlanders, maar ook aan het Nederlandse minderhedenbeleid en later het integratiebeleid in die 50 jaar. Het boekje is vorm gegeven door Hamid Oujaha

Om een indruk te krijgen van het beeld dat lezers van grote kranten van moslima’s krijgen, hebben we de foto’s van gesluierde moslima’s in drie grote kranten (De Telegraaf, NRC, de Volkskrant) in de afgelopen twee decennia geanalyseerd. In totaal zijn er 2561 foto’s geanalyseerd.
In de monitor worden cijfers weergegeven over ervaren discriminatie in Amsterdam en hoeveel meldingen er worden gedaan bij de politie en het Meldpunt Discriminatie Regio Amsterdam (MDRA).
Daarnaast is er in afzonderlijke hoofdstukken aandacht voor discriminatie op de arbeidsmarkt, in het onderwijs, op de woningmarkt en door de politie.
Ieder hoofdstuk start met een situatieschets, daarna volgt een beschrijving wat in grote lijnen het beleid van de gemeente is en geven experts suggesties voor verbetering.
Verder wordt een korte impressie gegeven van de actieonderzoeken die in opdracht van de gemeente Amsterdam zijn uitgevoerd naar anti-zwart racisme, antimoslimracisme, discriminatie van LHBTQI+ en antisemitisme.
Tot slot worden de resultaten beschreven van een enquête die onder 40 Amsterdamse maatschappelijke organisaties is gehouden.

The photographs paint a very one-sided picture, and the descriptions and search terms linked to the photographs contain keywords that often do not correspond with the content of the photographs. This contributes to the stereotyping and stigmatisation of Muslim women. Photographers are using these search terms for commercial reasons, to increase the findability of their photographs in the image database. These are the findings of research done by photographer Cigdem Yuksel and researcher Ewoud Butter.
The photos are one-sided and the descriptions and keywords in the photos contain words and concepts that often do not correspond to what can actually be seen in the photo, but that do contribute to stereotyping and stigmatization of Muslim women. Photographers use these words for commercial reasons to increase the findability of their photo. This is according to research I have done with photographer Cigdem Yuksel.

Er zijn in Nederland ongeveer 120 Internationale Schakelklassen (ISK’s), waar onderwijs wordt gegeven aan jongeren tussen 12 en 18 jaar die net in Nederland zijn of die het Nederlands niet of nauwelijks beheersen. Het gaat om leerlingen die alleen of met hun ouders naar Nederland zijn gevlucht, om kinderen van buitenlandse werknemers, maar ook om leerlingen die in het kader van gezinshereniging of -vorming naar Nederland zijn gekomen.
Behalve aan goed onderwijs hebben veel van deze leerlingen, die vaak de last dragen van een traumatisch verleden en zorgen over de toekomst, ook behoefte aan goede zorg. LOWAN en Pharos besloten daarom onderzoek te laten doen naar deze zorgbehoefte van ISK-leerlingen, de vragen en dilemma’s van ISK’s en enkele goede voorbeelden van zorgstructuren en handelswijzen.
Dit onderzoek is onlangs gepubliceerd op de website van LOWAN. Het onderzoek bestond uit interviews met ruim 50 medewerkers en leerlingen van ISK’s en uit een enquête die door 69 ISK’s werd ingevuld.
Eva Klooster en ik waren geregeld diep onder de indruk van de verhalen van de leerlingen (dappere jongeren, vaak met een fors traumatisch verleden), maar ook van de grote betrokkenheid en deskundigheid van sommige professionals die ieder op hun eigen wijze ‘nabijheid’ wisten te organiseren.
Maar hoe verdraagzaam zijn we in Nederland? En in hoeverre is er sprake van verschil van acceptatie van homoseksualiteit door verschillende herkomstgroepen? Is er sprake van een toename van LHBT-acceptatie? Neemt geweld in Nederland dat is gericht tegen deze groepen toe of af?

In veel gemeenten staat de maatschappelijke waarde van migrantenorganisaties ter discussie. De meeste organisaties zijn er zelf van overtuigd dat ze wel een maatschappelijke waarde hebben, maar ze kunnen deze waarde moeilijk omschrijven.
Deze toolkit is bedoeld voor organisaties die aan hun omgeving, aan hun partners, aan hun achterban, aan de gemeente, aan bedrijven of aan fondsen willen duidelijk maken wat hun maatschappelijke waarde is. De toolkit kan daarnaast een middel zijn om eens kritisch naar de eigen organisatie te kijken en de maatschappelijke waarde te vergroten.
De handreiking is primair voor Marokkaans-Nederlandse organisaties geschreven, maar ook beleidsmakers, professionals en vrijwilligers die voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten over radicalisering voor (Marokkaans-Nederlandse) ouders willen organiseren, kunnen er wat aan hebben.
