A transmission line based 5-channel power combiner allows both increase of output power and programmable filtering of the signal. A prototype has been built with 65 nm CMOS and Integrated Passive Devices (IPD) technologies. The system exhibits a 14 dB power gain for a peak power of 17 dBm at 1.2 GHz and an attenuation of out-of band noise of up to 15 dB. CMOS and IPD chip size are respectively 2.05 mm2 and 17.78 mm2.

Such devices are composed of coupled resonators without additional waveguide element, leading to a more compact architecture. Two topologies of compact diplexers are implemented and compared to a standard manifold diplexer. A hardware prototype is fabricated and measured for experimental verification. A compact triplexer is finally introduced for extending the concept to more than three ports.

Theory and equations as well as a first proof-of-concept at 2.2 GHz are presented. A 25% matching bandwidth (−10 dB), ± 1 dB amplitude imbalance and ± 2° phase imbalance are measured with a reduced footprint. Then, the same coupler topology is optimized at 60 GHz in a BiCMOS9MW and IPD technology, both from ST Microelectronics. Its implementation on both technologies is discussed and compared to state-of-the art recently published couplers operating at 60 GHz.
