The nodules opened spontaneously and produced a haemorrhagic exudate. The cause was Parafilaria bovicola, a filariid nematode not endemic to The Netherlands. The worm can cause substantial economic loss because of the need to trim carcasses and because of the diminished value of hides. The infection is spread by the fly Musca autumnalis, which is common in The Netherlands. Because treatment does not stop the infection from spreading, the bull was culled to prevent the risk of infection of the national herd. To our knowledge, this is the first case of Parafilaria bovicola in The Netherlands.
A sudden decrease in milk yield, increased respiratory rate and occasional coughing were observed... more A sudden decrease in milk yield, increased respiratory rate and occasional coughing were observed in dairy cows on two farms in spring 1991. Pigs were also kept on these farms, and pastures grazed by the cattle had been fertilised with pig slurry. Laboratory investigations of some of the cattle showed eosinophilia and high ELISA titres of antibodies against Ascaris suum. On one farm the clinical symptoms disappeared after the animals had been treated with oxfendazole and on the other farm the symptoms disappeared spontaneously with time.

Tick densities were calculated, and infection with Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species was investigated by reverse line blot analysis. The lowest tick density was observed in the heather area (1 to 8/100 m2). In the oak forest and city park, the tick densities ranged from 26 to 45/100 m2. The highest tick density was found in the dune area (139 to 551/100 m2). The infection rates varied significantly for the four study areas and years, ranging from 0.8 to 11. 5% for Borrelia spp. and 1 to 16% for Ehrlichia or Anaplasma (Ehrlichia/Anaplasma) spp. Borrelia infection rates were highest in the dunes, followed by the forest, the city park, and heather area. In contrast, Ehrlichia/Anaplasma was found most often in the forest and less often in the city park. The following Borrelia species were found: Borrelia sensu lato strain...

Thirty-five horses were treated. Their egg output was compared on the day of treatment and 14 days later with that of 33 untreated horses. Before treatment the mean number of eggs g-1 faeces was 614 in the controls and 766 in horses that had been treated. After 14 days the mean egg output in the controls was 580 and in the treated horses 369. This means a reduction of 54.5%. Only cyathostome larvae could be cultured from faeces collected after treatment. It can be concluded that benzimidazole resistance in cyathostomes is present in the Ukraine.

Faecal examination showed the presence of a high number of roundworm eggs of Toxocara vitulorum. The calf was a daughter of a Piemontese cow, born on the farm, but with a grandmother imported from France. This case describes the measures taken on the farm to prevent clinical problems and dissemination of the infection to other farms.

The eels were either killed and examined for parasites and lesions after 56 days, ...

In this study, we determined the mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of >400 flukes from 29 individual cattle, from 2 farms in the Netherlands, as an exemplar of fasciolosis in a European
