However, HZ can give rise to other complications, that have unusual presentations and serious sequelae like segmental motor paralysis of the limbs that is a relatively rare complication. A 68-year-old man presented with foot drop on the right side had a history of HZ infection on and around the knee and the popliteal fossa. He was treated with acyclovir by a dermatologist and 10 days after the inital symptoms he developed weakness on the right ankle and on the muscles distal to the knee. In a few days foot drop has developed and he was unable to walk without help. Three months later he was admitted to the neurology out patient clinic. On his electrophysiological examination common peroneal nerve could not be stimulated on the right side. The distal latency of the tibial nerve has prolonged, CMAP amplitude has diminished and the nerve conduction velocity has s...

We aimed to assess the nature of visual evoked potential (VEP) changes in migraine patients and to evaluate the role of VEP in the diagnosis of migraine. We examined 31 female and 10 male patients with a migraine headache diagnosis according to the criteria of the International Headache Society. Control subjects had neither migraine and other types of primary headache nor familial history. VEP were elicited using a checkerboard by monocular and binocular pattern reversal stimulation. The latencies of N75, P100 and N145 and peak-to-peak amplitude of N75-P100 were measured. We compared VEP latencies and amplitudes of the monocular and binocular stimulation within each population. The N75 and P100 latencies were found to be significantly longer in the study group than the control group (p = 0.014 and p = 0.034, respectively) while the amplitudes in the study...

We present the clinical and electrophysiological features of 5 patients who have been exposed to n-hexane at similar industrial occupations in the progressive phase. All patients underwent routine laboratory tests, cerebrospinal fluid examination, and sural nerve biopsy. Conventional sensory and motor nerve conduction studies were applied at admission and at the end of the 12 month. The average incubation period of the 5 cases was 10.2 months and the average period of the initial symptoms was 3.8 months. Numbness and weakness of the lower extremities were the initial symptoms that had ascended to the upper extremities in three of the patients. Deep tendon reflexes were either diminished or abolic. There was distal atrophy only in patient 5. All were treated with vitamin B complex and physical therapy and training. They were removed from further exposure...

Reduced cerebral perfusion may have an impact on mental performance as measured by the Benton Facial Recognition Test (BFRT). We evaluated the usefulness of BFRT in identifying cognitive decline in patients with VBI by correlating test performance with total blood flow in the vertebrobasilar system and other variables such as educational level and gender. Thirty-three participants without dementia (mini-mental state examination; MMSE >27) and cranial magnetic resonance imaging abnormality, but with atherosclerotic risk factors were involved in the study. Nineteen subjects had a total vertebrobasilar flow volume less than 200 ml/min (Group I), and 14 subjects had a flow volume more than 200 ml/min (Group II). The groups were similar in regard to gender, age, and educational level. BFRT results were 19.53 ± 3.12 and 22.36 ± 2.73 for Groups I and II, respectively (p=0.01). The educational level was the main factor affecting the BFRT score in Group I (p=0.04). BFRT is clearly impaired in VBI as measured by Doppler ultrasound examination. We concluded that the test appears to adequately distinguish cognitive levels between VBI and other patients. Additionally, our results suggest that education is associated with BFRT results, and for normative purposes, gender consideration is unnecessary. Further studies are needed to investigate the association between VBI and memory dysfunction in early dementia.
