The article describes the process of resettlement in Morococha, in the highland province of Yauli in Junín as well as its historical trajectory as a mining town pivotal to the development of the mining-metallurgic axis in the central highlands of Peru. Additionally, the article critically analyzes mining company discourse that frames the displaced subject and the construction of the sense of community in order to disentangle the terms in which social difference is organized. The article concludes with some insights on the depoliticization of the resettlement process as part of the new forms of corporate governmentality and the gap between endogenous discourses about belonging and practices of identification of affected individuals.

Advances in technology coupled with the availability of low‐cost sensors have resulted in the continuous generation of large time series from several sources. In order to visually explore and compare these time series at different scales, analysts need to execute online analytical processing (OLAP) queries that include constraints and group‐by's at multiple temporal hierarchies. Effective visual analysis requires these queries to be interactive. However, while existing OLAP cube‐based structures can support interactive query rates, the exponential memory requirement to materialize the data cube is often unsuitable for large data sets. Moreover, none of the recent space‐efficient cube data structures allow for updates. Thus, the cube must be re‐computed whenever there is new data, making them impractical in a streaming scenario. We propose Time Lattice, a memory‐efficient data structure that makes use of the implicit temporal hierarchy to enable interactive OLAP queries over large time series. Time Lattice is a subset of a fully materialized cube and is designed to handle fast updates and streaming data. We perform an experimental evaluation which shows that the space efficiency of the data structure does not hamper its performance when compared to the state of the art. In collaboration with signal processing and acoustics research scientists, we use the Time Lattice data structure to design the Noise Profiler, a web‐based visualization framework that supports the analysis of noise from cities. We demonstrate the utility of Noise Profiler through a set of case studies.

Visual analytics systems can greatly help in the analysis of urban data allowing domain experts from academia and city governments to better understand cities, and thus enable better operations, informed planning and policies. Effectively designing these systems is challenging and requires bringing together methods from different domains. In this paper, we discuss the challenges involved in designing a visual analytics system to interactively explore large spatio-temporal data sets and give an overview of our research that combines visualization and data management to tackle these challenges.

Large scale shadows from buildings in a city play an important role in determining the environmental quality of public spaces. They can be both beneficial, such as for pedestrians during summer, and detrimental, by impacting vegetation and by blocking direct sunlight. Determining the effects of shadows requires the accumulation of shadows over time across different periods in a year. In this paper, we propose a simple yet efficient class of approach that uses the properties of sun movement to track the changing position of shadows within a fixed time interval. We use this approach to extend two commonly used shadowing techniques, shadow maps and ray tracing, and demonstrate the efficiency of our approach. Our technique is used to develop an interactive visual analysis system, Shadow Profiler, targeted at city planners and architects that allows them to test the impact of shadows for different development scenarios. We validate the usefulness of this system through case studies set i...

True aneurysm of the dorsal artery of the foot is extremely rare and its clinical manifestations are little known. A case of a true dorsalis pedis artery aneurysm in a 51-year-old man, with no history of local trauma or injury on his foot, is presented. Clinical examination and ultrasonic imaging confirmed the aneurysm. Dorsalis pedis artery aneurysm after this had been exposed, the proximal and distal stumps of the dorsal artery of the foot were isolated and ligated, and the aneurysm was resected.

From economics to sports to entertainment and social media, ranking objects according to some notion of importance is a fundamental tool we humans use all the time to better understand our world. With the ever-increasing amount of user-generated content found online, "what's trending" is now a commonplace phrase that tries to capture the zeitgeist of the world by ranking the most popular microblogging hashtags in a given region and time. However, before we can understand what these rankings tell us about the world, we need to be able to more easily create and explore them, given the significant scale of today's data. In this paper, we describe the computational challenges in building a real-time visual exploratory tool for finding top-ranked objects; build on the recent work involving in-memory and rank-aware data cubes to propose TOPKUBE: a data structure that answers top-k queries up to one order of magnitude faster than the previous state of the art; demonstrate...

Tungsten carbide (WC) based cemented carbides, also called hardmetals, are a family of composite materials consisting of carbide ceramic particles embedded in a metallic binder. They are classified as metal matrix composites (MMCs) because the metallic binder is the matrix that holds the bulk material together [1]. WC based composites are used in applications where a good combination of hardness and toughness are necessary [2]. It is usual to add more components to tailor the microstructure of the WC-(Co, Ni) system. The hardness for the cemented carbides based on nickel, increases significantly because of the addition of reinforcements like SiC nanowhisker [3]. In this work, the SiC was considered as an additional component for the composite WC-8(Co, Ni). Four mixtures were prepared with SiC contents ranging from 0 to 3.0 wt%. These mixtures were pressed (200 MPa) and green samples with 25.2 mm of diameter and 40 g were produced. Sintering was carried out in Sinter-HIP furnace (20 ...

ABSTRACT In this paper a review on context and environment classification is presented with focus on autonomous service robots. A comprehensive research was made in order to classify the most relevant techniques, models and frameworks in use today, as well as to present possible future applications for these previous works. Most of the work done in this area has been focused in a general classification. In this sense a new possible application scenario is described and the corresponding supporting architecture.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Adalimumab (ADA) is a fully-human antibody that inhibits TNF alpha, with a significant efficacy and defined safety profile for long-term maintenance of remission. Studies with this agent in Latin American Crohn's disease (CD) patients are scarce. The primary objective of this study was to outline clinical remission rates after 12 months of ADA therapy for CD patients. Secondary objectives were to analyze demographic data, remission rates after 1, 4 and 6 months of therapy, adverse events (AE) and the influence of previous Infliximab (IFX) on remission rates.METHODS: Retrospective, single-center, observational study of a Brazilian case series of CD patients under ADA therapy. Inclusion criteria: CD patients, that had ADA therapy at any moment of their treatment. Exclusion criteria: patients with ulcerative colitis or indeterminate inflammation, with stomas and CD patients with less than 2 months of ADA therapy. Variables analyzed: demographic data, Montreal classification, concomitant medication, remission rates after 1, 4, 6 and 12 months, presence of AE and previous IFX. Remission was defined as Harvey-Bradshaw Index (HBI) <= 4, and non-responder-imputation (NRI) and last-observation-carried-forward (LOCF) analysis were used. Data were described with frequency tables and 95% confidence intervals (CI). The influence of IFX on remission rates was analyzed by Fischer and Chi-square tests, as well as with the inverted Kaplan-Meier method (P < 0.05).RESULTS: Fifty patients, with median age of 35 years at therapy initiation, were included. Mean CD duration was 73.6 months. Ileocolic CD was observed in 58% of the cases studied; 76% had penetrating disease, and perianal involvement was observed in 78% of patients. In relation to the remission rates, in LOCF analysis, after 12 months from the beginning of ADA therapy, 44 patients (88%) were in clinical remission (CI 95% 0.790-0.970). By taking into account the NRI evaluation, clinical remission rate decreased to 27 patients, corresponding to 54% of the cases (CI 95% 0.402-0.678). These findings are described in Figure 1. AE occurred in 16% of the patients, with only one serious event observed (herpes zoster infection). After 12 months, remission on patients with previous IFX occurred in 69.23% as compared to 94.59% in IFX-naive patients (P = 0.033), detailed in Figure 2.CONCLUSIONS: ADA therapy resulted in significant rates of CD clinical remission, reaching 54% of the patients after 12 months of therapy according to the NRI analysis and 88% according to the LOCF analysis. AE were observed in only 16% of the patients, and only 1 event was considered to be severe. The main cause for ADA discontinuation was the loss of access to the drug in the public health care system. The remission rates observed in patients with prior IFX therapy were lower than in those without previous exposure before ADA initiation. The importance of the findings in the present study, that must be interpreted with caution, is based on the fact that they constitute the first experience with ADA in the maintenance therapy for CD management in Latin American patients.(C) Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, Inc.
