This historical and cultural significances as a legacy can be passed to next generation by conserving the historical buildings. Nowadays in the process of conservation, Adaptive Reuse Practice has been necessary, especially when historical buildings are no longer functioning its original purpose. In the pursuit of the sustainable development, social sustainability has been the new parameter to investigate the viability of adaptive reuse. There are not enough studies held to explore the social parameter. In this regard an attempt has been made to investigate the viability of adaptive reuse and its social sustainability. Asia Heritage Row located in Doraisami Street and Jalan Yap Ah Shak, Kuala Lumpur, is used for the hypobook testing. The purpose of this book is to assess re-adaptive building impact to the social life of the users and their satisfaction after application of adaptive reuse and to evaluate the contribution of Asia Heritage Row after application of adaptive reuse towards cultural and aesthetical heritage values. The data is mainly collected from literature review, case study and questionnaires distributed to the end users of the Asia Heritage Row. The data is analyzed by determining the statically reliable relationship between adaptive reuse and social sustainability parameters. The associations between variables are examined by correlation. The findings show that adaptive reuse of Asia Heritage Row building has a significant value both; culturally and socially. It preserves the heritage significances as a place of social interaction and ensures its sustainability. The book then provides recommendations to improve application of adaptive reuse to the heritage buildings for future reference.

The task is to produce graduates as architects and architecture related khalifahs or stewards to enhance the built environment in God envisioned or tawhidic way. Design as the core course for architecture and studio as the laboratory or the madrasah for future architects in the making, making mistakes is part of the healthy learning process. Matrix of questions arises on how to educate the quantity of students from various background and mix, to qualify as the khalifah as he/she sets out upon graduation. How do we, teachers, the architecture murabbis, ensure and sustain the methodology of teaching to keep abreast with the expectations of the future khalifah’s amidst ever changing and demanding environment, technology and culture. This paper intends to share aspects of studio teaching methodology, the pioneering teachers of IIU...

In fact, architectural education encourages the “primacy of the autonomous designer by focusing all its attention on the student’s experience as an individual” (Cuff, 1991). This phenomenon is unlike the real situation in an architectural practice environment, where architects collaborate with structural, electrical and mechanical consultants, landscape and interior designers, contractors, clients, end-users etc.The need to instill collaborative capability among architectural students is essential because the success of architects is dependent upon the application of knowledge from multiple disciplines

This study analyzed the importance of outdoor green space in residential buildings. It consists of two objectives; to identify the type of home pocket gardens used and to evaluate the significant impact of home pocket gardens on the quality of life (QOL) during the pandemic. A survey was conducted using a five-point Likert scale and distributed to three housing communities within the Klang Valley. The finding shows the positive role of the Home Pocket Garden on the Quality of Life during the pandemic. Keywords: Pocket Garden, Quality of Life. eISSN: 2398-4287© 2021. The Authors. Locative AR games require the usage of big spaces for gamers to move around. Nevertheless, there is a question of whether public spaces are suitable for the spatial intervention of locative AR games players. Spatial intervention may become an issue among the public regarding accessibility, permeability, openness, centrality, and sense of security. This paper assesses the public perceptions of the spatial intervention of public spaces by locative AR games players. Researchers conducted this research by using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The primary data was obtained based on observation and survey questionnaires, whilst the secondary data was collected using desk research. The findings of this research could help city authorities to consider formulating new design criteria of public spaces that are safe for both AR games’ players and the public.

This research is organised around six major topics; the study region, the paradigm and methodology, research method and procedures, analysis of interview data, some ethical considerations and conclusion. This type of interpretative single case study research was selected because it allowed the use of a deduction mode of using the knowledge and information to understand something and form an opinion. Designing research methodology for the thesis requires prior identification of research aim, and objectives. Therefore, careful consideration should be undertaken so that strategies could be designed to achieve the objectives of research. For understanding of this research design, it is important to have context of the research b...

Besides being used for ritual prayers, a masjid is a place for learning, both secular and religious studies, and a place for honoring important historical occasions as well as a platform for announcements to society and national events. In the early days of Islam, the design of a masjid was very simple: it was a basic rectangular building with an orientation towards the Kaaba. During the Ummayyad and Abbasid caliphates, there was a rising number of masjids and courts were surrounded by shades areas. As Abdin (2010) highlights, elements in a masjid, niches such as the mihrab and mimbar, the seat for the orator (imam), and a minaret (maazana) were also developed during this time.

These schools, known as National School, have been found to be thermally uncomfortable by previous researchers. This study is intended to evaluate thermal comfort performance of three colonial schools, Victoria Institute, Methodist Girls Secondary School and Maxwell Secondary School. These schools should be able to represent the other colonial schools in Malaysia, which are located in urban settings. Field work was carried out in one classroom of each school. Environmental measurements were recorded, and thermal comfort surveys were carried out at certain hours. The data was analysed with Corrected Equatorial Comfort Index (CECI) and Tropical Summer Index (TSI). CECI and TSI predictions were agreeable with thermal comfort survey of the classroom occupants. According to CECI, TSI and thermal comfort su...

An equatorial maritime area was rich with trades and people traffic between the islands and mainland, with its own distinct culture. The coming of Islam into the region was accepted naturally without conquest and thus pave the way into the Malay culture and manifested in the existing architecture. In the inquiry of the meaning of symbolism found in the Masjid architecture in this region, differing from traditional masjid of the middle east or India, this paper intends to demonstrate how acculturation of Islamic faith and culture of the people in the Malay Archipelago were seamlessly expressed as symbolic meanings in their masjid architecture. Through literature review and case study visits to selected existing masjid of the Nusantara, the findings denote that symbolism, within the permit of the shariah, enhances the spatial and spiritual experience of the people. In the case of a masjid in Kerinci, Jambi in West Sumatra, th...

While the worldview of Masjid, as a pure Islamic Architecture based on the Middle-Eastern and Indian Sub-Continent Architecture, the Malay world concept of Masjid Architecture is given an image basked in mystic and layers of culture and beliefs system inherited from the non-Islamic period. The objective of this research are (i) to define Islamic Architecture as easily understood by the stakeholders whom may be clients, decision makers, multi-users of the masjid including architects; and (ii)to investigate the Malay architectural interpretation of Islamic architecture through the vernacular-Nusantara Masjid Architecture built-form as contribution to the guidelines appropriate for masjid design in the Nusantara region. A mix-mode research methodology is adopted for this research...

The Department of Architecture (DoA), in Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED), of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), has implemented the so-called Problem Based Learning in one of its core courses, named AAR 3201: Heritage Studies. Although PBL has not been thoroughly discussed in numerous forums, seminar, and conferences of architectural education through out the world, yet this approach has always been unconsciously implemented in learning and teaching of architecture. Similarly in DoA, this theoretical educational approach was not discussed when the process of developing the course was carried out, yet recent analysis on the course shows the existence of PBL essence in learning and teaching process of the course. The implementation of PBL educational approach has proven to effectively dev...
