The gills were removed and preserved in 5% formalin. Later the parasites were removed from the gills with the aid of a stereomicroscope and conserved in 70% alcohol. Some specimens were stained with Gomori's trichrome, dehydrated in absolute alcohol and cleared with faia creosote to observe the internal organs. Other specimens were mounted in Hoyer's medium for the study of the sclerotized structures. The present study describes a new monogenetic species, Demidospermus osteomystax n. sp., characterized by: tandem gonads; V-shaped haptoral bars with articulation; sinistral, non-sclerotized vagina; same-size anchors and absence of bulb in the cirrus.

Uma nova espécie de Demidospermus Suriano, 1983 parasita de brânquias de Auchenipterus osteomystax Miranda-Ribeiro...
Aim of the study: To adjust nonlinear Gompertz model to describe the body growth and feed intake ... more Aim of the study: To adjust nonlinear Gompertz model to describe the body growth and feed intake (FI) of free-range chickens of the CPK (Color Plumé) strain, receiving different levels of digestible lysine (dig-Lys), from 21 to 77 days of age.Area of study: São Cristovão, Sergipe, Brazil.Material and methods: A total of 432 one-day-old unsexed chickens were used in the study. At 21 days of age, the birds were assigned to four treatments (0.85%; 0.97%; 1.09%; 1.21%) of dig-Lys, in a completely randomized design with four replicates, with 27 birds per experimental unit. The Gompertz model was used to estimate bird growth curves related to body weight (BW) and FI at each Lys level.Main results: The tests of comparison between the parameters of the Gompertz model for each Lys level showed that parameter A varied, while parameters B (0.0329) and C (45.819) did not differ significantly. In parameter A, the dig-Lys level of 0.97% provided the highest BW estimate at maturity and maximum BW ...

Two experiments were carried out to determine corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn), through the method of total excreta collection with broiler chickens, and corrected true metabolizable energy (TMEn) and true digestibility of amino acids of (SFM), through the method of forced feeding with cecectomized roosters. The SFM used presented 89.95% of DM, 28.09% of CP, 4,429 kcal/kg of CE, 22.37% of CF, 2.87 of EE, 0.83% of P and 0.30% of Ca. The TMEn and AMEn were 2,200 and 1,983 kcal/kg, respectively. The values of lysine, methionine, and threonine were 0.68, 0.54, and 0.82, respectively. The occurrence of Diplectanum piscinarius Kritsky and Thatcher, 1984 was registered and it presented mean abundance of 31, mean intensity of 31.8 and prevalence of 97%. This paper also brings an ecological analysis of some aspects of the host-parasite relationship between D. piscinarius and P. squamosissimus. There were not significant differences between the prevalence and intensity of parasitism of males and females. There were not correlations between abundance and prevalence and the standard length of the hosts; and between relative condition factor (Kn) and abundance. From the results it is possible to assume that there are few physiological and behavioral differences between male and female hosts. Physiological changes probably do not occur during the development of the hosts and parasites do not seem to be very pathogenic.

Specifically about amino acids, the deficiency in the initial phase prevents the maximum proteic deposition while the excess at the end of the phase, beyond it represents waste, it spends additional energy with excretion in the form of uric acid. The solution proposed for this nutritional impasse has been the recommendation of the adoption of a larger number of diets during the life of birds, known as phase-feeding program, where the differences between required and supplied are lower. In formulating the diets for the phase-feeding, researchers have used mathematical models developed from the requirements set by performance experiments or growth curve and deposition of protein in birds. Among the models available, the Gompertz equation is that b...

Three Ca digestibility tests were carried out, each assessing 240 Lohmann Brown lineage laying hens distributed in a completely randomized design. Nine dietary treatments were arranged in a 3 × 3 factorial design consisting of three ages (40, 50 and 70 weeks) × three Ca (dicalcium phosphate (DCP) sources, fine (FL) and coarse (CL)) limestone, comprising eight replicates per treatment of six birds per experimental unit. Thus, two experiments were carried out aiming at evaluating two different digestible lysine levels in the starter (10 to 21 days) and growth (22 to 35 days) phases. Male and female chickens of the Cobb 500 strain were utilized in a completely randomized blocks experimental design, in a 5×2 factorial arrangement (5 digestible lysine levels and 2 genders), with 8 replicates of 22 and 20 birds per experimental unit, for each of the previously mentioned phases. The digestible lysine levels utilized at the different phases were: from 10 to 21 days of age, 1.06; 1.12; 1.18; 1.24 and 1.30% and from 22 to 35 days of age, 0.92; 0.98; 1.04; 1.10 and 1.16% digestible lysine. It was observed that the digestible lysine requirements for maximum performance in broiler chickens are 1.22 for males and 1.24% for females a...

At weaning, 70 piglets from each treatment were distributed in five groups (replicates) of 14 piglets (seven males and seven females). Weights (animals and feed intake) were taken at post-weaning and at each feed change (days 14, 28 and 42 of raising). During the first two weeks of lactation, there were no effects o...
