The forests of Victoria were once the scene of a thriving industry of sawmilling and timber cutti... more The forests of Victoria were once the scene of a thriving industry of sawmilling and timber cutting. The relatively undisturbed remains of the industry provides the basis for an historical and archaeological investigation of sawmill sites which includes a general survey of sites and detailed recording of three representative sites. The study concentrates on aspects of location and technology and establishes patternsof variability and change in the industry through time and space. In recognising the primary nature of the study the problems of preservation and visibility are ass eased and a recording strategy is established.

Predictive modelling of Aboriginal archaeological sites has been a common thread in Victorian arc... more Predictive modelling of Aboriginal archaeological sites has been a common thread in Victorian archaeological practice for many decades. With the advance of GIS-based mapping methods, it is now possible to employ more sophisticated and automated techniques to characterise the available archaeological data, and to develop analytical methods to assist in the identification, investigation and evaluation of the archaeological record. The use of spatial data is now embedded in the Aboriginal heritage legislation, with specific geographic criteria to determine "Aboriginal cultural heritage sensitivity" as one trigger for a Cultural Heritage Management Plan. By describing the landscape features of recorded cultural heritage sites, criteria for mapping cultural heritage sensitivity have been derived, such as distance from waterways, coastlines, and existing archaeological places, and the presence of sand ridges, swamp margins, and ancestral streams. The Historic Places Section DCE, Museum of Victoria, and Department of Planning, undertook a site... more The Historic Places Section DCE, Museum of Victoria, and Department of Planning, undertook a site recording project with many volunteers, to assess and record the buildings, machinery and objects at this early flour mill and farm complex near Murchison Victoria. The project included a catalogue of thousands of objects, plans of the buildings and machinery and analysis of the history and operation of the site. "This report presents the results of a two week summer school at Day's Mill and Farm, Murchison, the subsequent analysis of the data assembled during that intensive period of recording and cataloguing and the measured drawings produced since the summer school. The primary aims of the summer school at the mill and subsequent analysis were to develop a comprehensive inventory of the moveable artefacts on the property and fittings in its buildings, to measure all buildings on site and produce measured architectural drawings and to assess the milling machinery in order to ...
