Personal construct psychotherapy – and hermeneutic constructivist psychotherapy which represents a development enhancing its affinity with phenomenology and the theory of autopoiesis – espouses a constructivist view of knowledge which allows to transcend the many dualisms characterizing many psychologies and psychotherapies and, among these, also the dualism between an explicit and an implicit channel of communication. The present contribution is aimed at supporting the thesis of the ontological role of language in the creation of personal worlds, and showing, also by means of the synthesis of a psychotherapeutic conversation, the work accomplished with...

Kelly’s notions of dependency and role, Honneth’s and Ricoeur’s philosophical reflections on mutual recognition and intersubjective relationships, and Ricoeur’s understanding of narrative identity are considered, with a reference also to Benjamin’s relational psychoanalytic insight on the role of intersubjectivity in therapeutic relationships. Building on these contributions, the author proposes a differentiation between developmental trajectories—called “uncompleted paths of mutual recognition”—that supposedly derive from specific conditions of intersubjective imbalance. Such an imbalance is considered to be implicated in the majority of clinically significant cases of personal distress, in which the person suffers from a perceived lack of recognition from others. In doing so, the relational patterns relevant to such trajectories and the principal construct dimensions—often preverbalized constructions—that make up the narrative identities are tentatively outlined.

For this reason, they take advantage of a dialogue with the philosophical tradition of hermeneutic phenomenology, concerned with the problem of interpretation and understanding of human experience. This article briefly reviews the similarities between hermeneutic phenomenology and the postmodern movement in psychology, before critically outlining the variegated field of hermeneutic approaches to psychotherapy.

Kelly was a North American psychologist born on a farm buried deep in the prairies of Kansas. Humberto R. Maturana is a South American biologist, born in a crowded town. Deepening our knowledge of their life experiences, we could find many differences. Notwithstanding this, the ideas developed by Kelly and Maturana serve as an example ofKelly's Commonality Corollary: "to the extent that one person employs a construction ofexperience which is similar to that employed by another, his psychological processes are similar to the other person" (Kelly, 1955, p. 90).

After an exploration of the phenomenological and hermeneutic signs in PCT, a tentative outline of a hermeneutic constructivist psychotherapy is given, suggesting the enrichment which could derive to personal construct psychotherapy from a comparison with Maturana’s theory of autopoiesis, Gadamer’s hermeneutic conversation, and Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of narrative self and recognition. The proposal of two main forms of uncompleted recognition, and the respective core narratives observed in disordered people, is presented at the end of the chapter as the possible result of the application of a narrative hermeneutic approach to personal construct psychotherapy.

On the other hand, hermeneutic constructivism rejects both a subjectivist and an objectivist view in favor of an interdependence of a mutual specification between subject and object--a subject/object complementarity. We are trying to elaborate Personal Construct Theory (PCT) as a hermeneutic constructivist theory. We aim to offer some hints in this direction, stressing what we regard as three of the most important, distinctive features of hermeneutic constructivism. We can find them extensively treated in hermeneutic phenomenology under the headings of historicity, embodied subjectivity, and language--dimensio...
