- In my life, I have pursued interests in mathematics, physics, philosophy, computer science, community development, ed... moreIn my life, I have pursued interests in mathematics, physics, philosophy, computer science, community development, educational research and sculpture—each of which I found intellectually challenging. These disciplines have run as threads through a series of interconnected careers across several decades.My publications stem mostly from the two decades when I was involved in academia as a computer scientist and educational researcher. They focus primarily on my research in Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) Most of my CSCL publications discuss real instances of students learning math collaboratively in the Virtual Math Teams (VMT) research project which I directed at Drexel University and the Math Forum with a series of NSF grants.My research developed a philosophy of "group cognition" -- derived from analyses of groups of students discussion mathematics in an online collaboration environment featuring support for multi-user dynamic geometry.My philosophy is grounded in Marx and Heidegger. My sculpture is primarily non-representational wood carvings with organic forms that "open up" their masses.edit

The Coronavirus pandemic has thrown public schooling into crisis, trying to juggle shifting instructional modes: classrooms, online, home-schooling, student pods, hybrid and blends of these. This poses an urgent need to redesign curriculum using available technology to implement approaches that incorporate the findings of the learning sciences, including the emphasis on collaborative learning, computer mediation, student discourse and embodied feedback. This paper proposes a model of such learning, illustrated using existing dynamic-geometry technology to translate Euclidean geometry study into collaborative learning by student pods. The technology allows teachers and students to interact with the same material in multiple modes, so that blended approaches can be flexibly adapted to students with diverse preferred learning approaches or needs and structured into parallel or successive phases of blended learning.
