Equity Perspectives and Restrictionist Policies: Tensions in Dual Language Bilingual Education, 2019

This four-year ethnographic study explored the hegemonic realities of TWDLI classrooms and the role language played in affording and restricting the types of talk that occurred. Two primary findings were: (1) the tensions embedded in contexts of language and power gave way to restrictionist policies that both protected and constrained the types of talk that occurred; and (2) translanguaging manifested during both dominant language instruction as well as unrestricted spontaneous language events as participants exercised agentive power while negotiating both covert and over policies through resistance capitals.

Second-language issues can add to teachers’ anxiety about how to manage intervention programming and whether to initiate a referral for special education. This chapter focuses on the concepts of learning disability versus difficulty and the perspectives of L2 teachers who must navigate the referral and identification processes of schools when considering a student for possible long-term special education services. The definition for L2 employed here could be representative of a few possible examples: a native French speaker (foreign language; L2 teacher) instructing in an English-speaking school; or a mother-tongue English teacher of a Latino child (L2 student). The second-language (L2) aspect could be on the part of the teacher or the student. In either case, the teacher has to manage the referral to possible identification process and all of its nuances.

The determination of the ferrochelatase activity and the biological molecular studies have shown that both autosomal dominant and recessive patterns of inheritance are possible. Is reported the case of a 17 years-old male patient with erythropoietic protoporphyria and porokeratosis. There are some hepatic biochemical abnormalities without cholelithiasia and without pathological change of the liver biopsy. Leucocyte ferrochelatase activity is decreased to 5 p. 100 of the normal mean level. In both the parents, without photosensitivity, the enzyme activity is reduced to 40 p. 100 of the normal values. The patients with severe ferrochelatase defect have no more important clinical manifestations than in the usual form of erythropoietic protoporphyria. For clarify the exact mode of inheritance, the determination of the ferrochelatase activity and the identification of the mut...
