Prof. Dr. Hojka Kraigher is the Head of Department for Forest Physiology and Genetics and of the Research Program Forest Biology, Ecology and Technology at the Slovenian Forestry Institute. Her expertise is in physiology and ecology of forest trees and their symbionts, and in conservation of forest genetic resources. She is at present coordinating a LIFE implementation project on development of a system for forest genetic monitoring “LIFEGENMON”. She is the authorized person by the Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry and Food responsible for conservation of forest genetic resources and certification of the forest reproductive material, and has been the national coordinator EUFORGEN since 1995.

For this, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature spanning the past thirty years (1991–2020). Putting together the representative regionwide expertise of our co-authorship, we propose research perspectives for the next decade. Recent Findings Forest genetics research in Mediterranean countries is organized into three different scientific domains of unequal importance. The domain “Population diversity and Differentiation” related to over 62% of all publications of the period, the domain “Environmental conditions, growth and stress response” to almost 23%, and the domain “Phylogeography” to almost 15%. Citation rate was trending the opposite way, indicating a st...

Wild cherry (Prunus avium L.) is an increasingly important minority tree species due to its ecological significance and quality wood, but it is diff...
Larger number of wild cherry candidate plus trees in the entire area of Slovenia were identified ... more Larger number of wild cherry candidate plus trees in the entire area of Slovenia were identified and recorded. Detailed seven-scale evaluation of their vitality, stem straightness, crown size, constriction, cylindrical trunk growth, trunk warping, branch diameter, branching angle and forking resulted in the selection of 107 trees possessing the most desirable characteristics. Selected trees are relatively large and of phenotypically superior quality. The established register of wild cherry plus trees in Slovenia represents a selection of superior individual phenotypes that will be used as a source of parental trees to establish a first-generation seed orchard and then, if appropriate, as a source of superior material for the next breeding steps and further breeding programs.
