Its roots have been used for anti-inflammation, anticancer, antiviral and antibacterial infections of the respiratory and the gastrointestinal tract, cleaning away heat, moistening aridity, purging fire, detoxifying toxicosis, reducing the total cholesterol level and decreasing blood pressures. Baicalin, baicalein, wogonin and oroxylin A are its main active components. This review provides an overview of various separation, detection, and identification techniques employed for the quantitative and qualitative determination of these active components. Applications of high-performance liquid chromatography, high-speed counter-current chromatography, thin layer chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography to the separation and determination of these active components are described. Examples of identification of these active components an...

The method was based on the formation of an ionic pair between iodide-methylmercury-rhodamine B in hydrochloric acid, which can be extracted with benzene. The fluorescence emission was measured at lambda(ex)/lambda(em) 575/590 nm, and the experimental variables and possible interference were studied. The linear calibration range was 4 x 10(-8) mol/L to approximately 5 x 10(-7) mol/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.9992. The detection limit was 1 x 10(-8) mol/L. The method was used to determine methylmercury in human hair. The recovery was in the range of 91% to 105% and the relative standard deviation was 2.8%. The results agreed with those obtained by gas chromatography with electron capture detection.

There are two intramolecular N-H...O bonds and one intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen bond in (I). The rings formed by the N-H...O hydrogen bonds are almost planar. In (II), three intramolecular N-H...O hydrogen bonds exist.

The microalgae were extracted using hexane, ethyl acetate and water by a three-step sequential extraction procedure. Most of these microalgae were evaluated for

In order to explore the potential of fruit wastes as natural resources of bioactive compounds, the antioxidant potency and total phenolic contents (TPC) of lipophilic and hydrophilic components in wastes (peel and seed) of 50 fruits were systematically evaluated. The results showed that different fruit residues had diverse antioxidant potency and the variation was very large. Furthermore, the main bioactive compounds were identified and quantified, and catechin, cyanidin 3-glucoside, epicatechin, galangin, gallic acid, homogentisic acid, kaempferol, and chlorogenic acid were widely found in these residues. Especially, the values of ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and TPC in the residues were higher than in pulps. The results showed that fruit residues could be inexpensive and readily available resources of bioactive compounds for use in the food and pharmaceutical ind...

The crude salvianolic acid B was obtained by extraction with ethanol–water from S. miltiorrhiza Bunge. Preparative high-speed counter-current chromatography with a two-phase solvent system composed of n-hexane–ethyl acetate–ethanol–water (3:7:1:9, v/v) was successfully performed yielding 342 mg salvianolic acid
