The primary subject, though referred to as aHanren(and therefore allowed to leave Qaraqorum’s northern climate), is exclusively identified by the Mongolian nickname Shira (‘golden/yellow’), due to the colour of his facial hair. All of Shira’s descendants, while being ‘Han’ and remembered in formal Chinese inscriptions, are recorded under Turco-Mongol names, and the texts highlight generosity in famine relief to people in the Mongol heartland alongside more typical tropes of concern for a ‘Chinese’ populace. The selective deployment of cultural elements thus differs from other biographical narratives in a number of key aspects. While none of its subjects are of great fame, the texts draw together key themes in Yua...

Taken from Cai Meibiao's 1955 edition, these texts all apply to the 'Thatched-Hall Chan Temple' caotang chansi 草堂禪寺 located in Hu County 鄠縣, Shaanxi 陝西省, reportedly first established in 401 CE to house the monk and translator Kumārajīva.

Yelü Shichang 耶律世昌 (1247-1294), a Confucian scholar and indirect descendant of Chinggis Qan's Kitan lieutenants Yelü Tuhua and Yelü Ahai, was briefly placed in charge of the administration of Yaozhou 耀州, within the Anxi Circuit, in 1293, but died shortly thereafter. Excavated in Xi'an in 1950, the muzhiming tombstone and lid from Shichang's tomb, completed in 1326 on the burial of his wife, née Shimo, are now kept at the Beilin 'Stele Forest' Museum in Xi'an.
