The authors, with an extensive bibliographic research, have identified the ancient names referable to mollusks and have correlated them with 115 species of mollusks (marine, terrestrial and fresh-water), certainly known to the ancient mediterranean peoples; in doing so they took into account how Linnè called and described those same animals and they systematically applied the ethnobiological ranks to the ancient names up to propose hypothesis of ancient vernacular systematics. The text, although written in Italian, can also be used by readers of other languages owing to the schematicity of the 25 tables and 101 glossary terms, in which ancient or scientific latin terms prevail.
