The experimental results for the high-frequency attenuation and the dispersive velocity shifts are found to be in good agreement with the model of a single critical relaxation time.

Enhancement of diffusion was obtained for all temperatures. Pre-exponential factors and activation energies were evaluated by least-squares fitting of the experimental data to the Arrhenius equation. From the obtained values of the enhancement factor b and using the literature data of the diffusion coefficients of Co diffusion in pure V, correlation factors for Co diffusion in V were calculated for different temperatures.

The compounds NdGa6 and CeGa6 have a primitive tetragonal structure with the following lattice parameters: NdGa6 CeGa6 A large solid solubility range exists between the RGa2-type compound and Nd-80at.%Ga or Ce-78at.%Ga. This phase has a hexagonal structure, the lattice parameters of which increase with the concentration of gallium.

No change in slope of the Arrhenius curve was found, such as has been reported for vanadium self-diffusion, and the curve was linear. It seems that one single diffusion mechanism is operative through the entire temperature range. The data can be fitted to the relation

Four intermetallic compounds were identified: Nd3Ga, Nd5Ga3, NdGa and NdGa2. The DTA results indicate the possible existence of two intermetallic compounds, unidentified as yet, on the gallium-rich side. NdGa2 melts congruentiy at a temperature of 1488 °C and the other compounds form peritectically. Two eutectic reactions were found in this system: one at 651 °C on the neodymium-rich side and a second at 30 °C on the gallium-rich side. The allotropic transition of neodymium is lowered from 867 °C to 813 °C when more than 1 at.% gallium is added. The structure of Nd3Ga was found to be of the cubic Cu3Au type and the lattice parameter was found to be .

It is assumed that volume mismatch between a precipitate and a matrix decreases with the growth of the precipitate. Under this assumption an energetically favored nucleation may occur for any cluster size. It is found that the relative volume difference between the unstressed precipitate and unstressed matrix is of an oscillating character and might have low values, e.g., ∼10-2–10-3% for a precipitate containing ∼103 Co atoms in Au matrix.
