Service-learning has become a significant area of research and practitioner interest in TESOL (Wu... more Service-learning has become a significant area of research and practitioner interest in TESOL (Wurr, 2013). Given the increase in students coming to the United States for TESOL teacher preparation in the past decade, our interest relates to the challenges faced by international students in TESOL Master's programs who engage in community-based ESL teaching to fulfill field-based practice requirements. In reviewing the literature, we seek to identify the benefits and challenges for this particular group. We describe the procedures at the University of Pennsylvania's TESOL Master's program for working with community partners. We discuss three key issues in working with international student teachers (the development of teacher identity, emphasis on service as well as learning, and institutional support), and propose that utilizing service-learning pedagogy can help programs better prepare student teachers for their future careers.
