Research Writing by Jaime Alfredo Cabrera
ABSTRACT
The purpose of a doctoral dissertation is to contribute original, new, and undiscovered knowledge. Writing a doctoral dissertation is a complex research activity that follows certain standards, structures, and procedures. This paper presents the benefits and importance of research, the different types of research and research designs, the parts of research and to critique each part, and three research proposals related to the writer’s major field of study. This paper is organized in nine chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the utility, purpose, and practice of formal research writing, as well as summarizes three original research proposals. Chapter 2 presents an overview of how research is important in various fields. Chapter 3 presents the benefits of formal research writing know-how. Chapter 4 outlines the different types of research writing and how to critique each part. Chapter 5 outlines the different ways of designing a research activity. Chapter 6 presents the parts of a research paper and the steps to writing a research paper. Chapter 7 presents a dissertation proposal for English teachers to better help ESL learners pass a course in Academic English. Chapter 8 presents a dissertation proposal for ESL teachers to effectively address plagiarism in student writings by using low technology. Chapter 9 presents a dissertation proposal for ESL teachers and students to use educational philosophy in practical situations, specifically to reduce dissonances in the learning experience as explained by The Uncertainty Avoidance Theory. The paper ends with a Conclusion and a List of References.
ABSTRACT
Inferential statistics plays an important role in various fields of human endeavor as well as in personal development. It is a way of measuring uncertainties as well as a formal way of expressing probabilities, predictions, extrapolations, and other extensions of reasoning and thought that go beyond the available data.
According to the parameters of scientific practice, inferential statistics may be used erroneously and thus produce incorrect results. With correct usage, inferential is accepted as a key element in scientific research procedures, particularly in doctoral dissertations because, by definitions, a doctoral dissertation is a formal research paper that creates new knowledge including new hypotheses or models.
The first chapter introduces key terminology, history, importance and advantages, dangers and limitations of statistics in general and inferential statistics in particular. Chapter 2 explains how formal numerical inference is used in various fields, and in different types of research papers. Chapter 3 defines science and presents key concepts that prove that inferential statistics is, indeed, a scientific methodology. The concluding chapter explains how writing this research paper is relevant to the writer as a student and as a professional.

ABSTRACT
Greek tragedy follows specific storytelling conventions to satisfy the audiences during the time of Homer and Sophocles. These conventions include elements such as the willing suspension of disbelief, the heroic proportions of the attributes of tragic protagonists, fate, hubris, hamartia, and catharsis. This paper answers three assignment questions. (1) What fate doomed the character of Oedipus? (2) What prophecies of Cassandra were ignored, resulting in tragic ends of those close to Paris? (3) If Cassandra’s prophecies were heeded, could Paris’ destiny have been avoided? Why or why not? In Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, the character of Oedipus was fated to commit patricide and maternal incest. In Homer’s The Iliad, Cassandra’s prophecies that were ignored and which resulted in the tragic end of the royal House of Troy are: (1) that Paris’s trip to Sparta would result in disaster; (2) that Helen’s stay in Troy will bring tragedy to the Trojans; and (3) that bringing the Trojan horse into the city walls will cause the ruin of the city of Troy. If Cassandra’s prophecies were heeded, Paris’s destiny would not be avoided because catharsis is required in Greek tragedy; the protagonist must not triumph over adversity. This paper is organized in three chapters. The Introduction defines key elements of tragic literary structure: protagonist, catharsis, hubris, hamartia, and fate. The second chapter, Oedipus Rex, discusses those key elements in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex. The last chapter, Helen of Troy, discusses those key elements in Homer’s The Iliad. This paper ends with a References and an Appendices section.

world of literary greats. The outstanding characteristics as representative of the world’s great
literary masterpieces of poetry from various cultures of the world are presented.
Philosophies are beliefs of being, doing, and relating; ideas that are established enough to be observable as consistent and stable behavioral phenomena over time. Modern Filipino philosophy refers to shared beliefs in ways of doing, being, and relating that are observable between 1946 and 1994 as behaviors among the cultures and subgroups of the Philippine Archipelago, including Filipinos who are working or living overseas. This paper presents elements of philosophical articulation of native Filipino thought. The paper answers three research questions. (1) What is Filipino philosophy? (2) How did modern philosophy begin and develop? (3) How can modern philosophy influence Filipino philosophy? The debate in literature is that Filipino philosophy is at its nascent stage, originating from folk wisdom, religion, and contacts with foreign cultures; extant as philosophic acts, beliefs, or mind-sets but never formally articulated according to the canons of the dominant philosophic tradition and; is continually reshaped by technological, scientific, and significant historical events that elicit strong or deep feelings and reactions throughout the country. Older thought patterns and behaviors are preserved by traditional circles and conservative environments but changes continue. Meanwhile, for global understanding, the need to articulate modern Filipino philosophical thought in ways that can be clearly understood by other cultures is increasingly urgent. This paper presents some tools and approaches to help meet the challenges of articulating modern Filipino philosophy: (a) articulating native philosophical thought in oral tradition, folk wisdom, and indigenous literature in accordance with the world‘s established canons of philosophical tradition; (2) developing precise and succinct native vocabulary to parallel the vocabulary of the dominant philosophical tradition; (3) identifying national philosophic thought and principles from events that elicit nationwide emotion and create behavior patterns observable throughout the country over a significant period of time; (4) deducing philosophical notions from patterns in linguistic elements common in speech and texts among the nation‘s various languages; and (5) identifying philosophic trigger points in the nation‘s history that have and can shape the development of philosophic thought.
This chapter summarizes the state of Philippine speculative fiction, the key findings of the study, and groundwork for future studies such as the nature of genre, genre taxonomy design, augmenting taxonomic functions, and simplifying sfict text analysis. The chapter ends with sets of hypotheses recommended for study.
Speculative fiction (sfict) is global, breaks literary conventions, evolves literary forms, and pushes storytelling standards, thus the need for an sfict genre taxonomy that is both stable and responsive to change. One challenge is that genre taxonomy design is complex, resource-intensive, and requires input from without the domains of literary theory and practice. Another challenge is that genre taxonomy is limited to prescriptive naming and categorization but systematic sfict text and genre categorization requires standard assessment systems with descriptive evaluation structures. This study posits that familiar systems and constructs can be used to create a systematic genre taxonomy that is stable as well as accommodating of genreic changes.
Research Goals:
The initial goal was to resolve the arbitrary and confusing names of sfict text and genre categories. Anent that, this study lays the groundwork for research by organizing empirical elements into objective standards and systems for the design sfict genre taxonomy and of standard tools for objective analysis of sfict stories and genres.
Output:
A Philippine focus is used to design output for use in other cultural contexts. The study organized more than 2,000 empiricals some 200 instruments that suggested 199 hypotheses while articulating protocols for genre taxonomy design and analysis, genre identification, and objective literary analysis. Instruments use simple addition, averaging, ranking with step-by-step instructions and reference charts to elicit empirical proof in support of descriptive evaluations.
Original Contributions:
This study presents objective standards for organizing sfict genres, subgenres, emergents (unacknowledged genres), and varigens (descriptive, nontaxonomic genre varieties). As well, it posits concepts of novumality (nature of the novum) for analysis of genrecality (genre identity), and manovum and minovum functions for genreicity (genre class) analysis. The study also shows how frequency analysis is used for literary, genre, and taxonomy quality analysis, and shows how standardized tools can elicit principles into hypotheses for study.
This chapter presents the research problem, the local and universal issues addressed by the study, the pedagogical, pragmatic, and cultural values of the study, the research questions and their underlying assumptions and parameters, and definitions of key terms.
This chapter summarizes the exploratory research of a multidisciplinary body of literature on the theories, principles, and standards related to the systematic design of a logical taxonomy of contemporary short sfict; to the empirical evaluation of sfict texts, genres, and instruments related to their categorization; and relevant elements of heuristics applicable to hypotheses formulation.
This chapter presents groundwork for future research including design of instruments and procedures for systematic design and analysis of contemporary sfict genre taxonomy; for empirical analysis of inherent qualities of narrative fiction stories and genres; and for theory formulation.
This chapter presents the relevant instruments and protocols produced by the study, analyzes data significance, and interprets embedded hypotheses for genrecality, genreicity, nomenclature, taxonomy, the conventions of the short story, as well as the standard conventions of literary quality.
