The concept of appropriation, popular among cultural historians, ethnologists and scholars in the... more The concept of appropriation, popular among cultural historians, ethnologists and scholars in the fields of Translation Studies and Adaptation Studies, signifies a focus on the recipient instead of the producer of culture. Using this concept one distances oneself from a fidelity discourse in which the original occupies centre stage and in which reception is associated with trivialising the source text. Especially when dealing with the reception of classical epic poems appropriation turns out to be a fertile concept. This article illustrates this by looking at two very diverse Dutch examples of creative responses to Dante’s Divina Commedia, dating from the second half of the nineteenth century: a liberal view regarding Dante (Potgieter’s epic poem Florence) and catholic appropriations (by Alberdingk Thijm and Schaepman) of the Divine Comedy.

In research on early nineteenth-century Dutch literature, the idea predominates that genres such ... more In research on early nineteenth-century Dutch literature, the idea predominates that genres such as the gothic novel and melodrama did not feature, or only seldom featured, in the Netherlands. Only much later would this change, and Dutch melodrama has thus been described as a 'belated phenomenon'. However, is this really the case? We know already that these genres were discussed and read in translation and the example of Van der Hoop's Han van IJsland, a theatrical adaptation of Victor Hugo's debut novel, shows that gothic and melodramatic traditions can also be traced in original texts. Applying Peter Brooks' concept of the 'melodramatic mode' (a mode of 'excess') can be useful when understanding theatrical texts like Van der Hoop's adaptation, but possibly also for other genres.

Dutch critics preferred harmless genres like domestic and regional novels. In the critical debate after the revolutions of 1830 and 1848 fear of upheaval was accompanied by anti-French sentiments. In this atmosphere George Eliot’s first novel Adam Bede grew into the perfect example of a modern novel. Paradoxically one of the Dutch reviewers referred to a much discussed essay from the French journalist Montegut, whose sympathy for the protestant and English novelistic tradition was fully in line with the chauvinistic and Francophobic discourse.

His novels and short stories were translated into Dutch very soon after their original publication and in cultural periodicals his name was mentioned regularly. Auerbach’s works, like those of his German contemporaries were considered to be ‘healthy’ alternatives to the ‘obscenities’ of French realism. Initially the Dutch debate about Auerbachs ‘Dorfsgeschichte’ (village tale) centres around the didactic function but gradually the genre’s esthetic value receives more attention. In the process of the development of a more or less autonomous literary system, the reception of foreign literature appears to have had a catalyzing function.
