The issue is approached empirically – with an extensive database of valency patterns. To avoid bias in favour of Central European patterns, other languages are also included in the comparison. The descriptive statistical method used here is affinity analysis. The article deals in detail with three groups of corresponding valency markers in the case of which one can claim Central European areal patterns. The semantics behind the observed patterns is also explored, pointing to otherwise unnoticed features that seem to be reflected in the grammatical marking.

The analysis relies on semantic roles associated with individual predicates, so-called microroles (Hartmann/Haspelmath/Cysouw 2014), and involves a comparison of the distribution of grammatical elements (cases and adpositions) marking the arguments corresponding to particular microroles. The degree to which the distributions of markers in certain languages correspond to each other is captured by means of a distance index, a simple statistical measure introduced in the paper. The results provide some support for Donaubund (represented by Czech, German and Hungarian), but also show general parallels among all the investigated languages.

We explore whether constituent order patterns found in the analyzed text conform with the rules and tendencies described for Old English in general and try to determine whether the Latin original has an influence on the order of the target text. This is achieved by working with a parallel corpus. In the analysis we consider a number of factors mentioned in the literature in connection with the V-2 phenomenon. The study shows that the researched text closely follows the tendencies identified in original Old English compositions and that the Latin influence on the translation is very limited. The findings and the developed methodology have implications for studies of both Old English and other Old Germanic languages since they enabl...

The study’s innovative approach relies on translated texts, which allows the authors to tackle the problem of the apparent incomparability of OE and OHG textual records and to identify the areas of OE and OHG syntax potentially influenced by the Latin source texts. This is especially important from the point of view of OE research, where Latin is rarely considered to be a significant variable. The book’s profile and content is of direct interest to historical linguists working on OE and/or OHG (and Old Germanic languages in general), but it can also greatly benefit several other groups of researchers: scholars applying corpus methods to the study of dead languages, historical linguists generally, linguists researching element order as well as specialists in translation studies.
