In the year 2007 to 2011, the construction industry experienced economic downturn causing uncertainty in the profession. This study examined the developmental trend of the quantity surveying profession in the construction industry to determine its future. The independent variable was the current level of satisfaction of quantity surveyors while the dependent variable was the future growth of the profession. The working hypothesis was that the profession would experience future growth. A survey questionnaire via Qualtrics online survey software was administered to quantity surveyors to determine their opinion of the profession. Data collected were analyzed using SAS v9.4 statistical analysis software. The results showed a greater level of satisfaction of quantity surveyors with the current developments in the profession. Further, the current level of satisfactio...

Arriving at this value may require different evaluation tools such as goal programming, weighted product method, utility function, among others. These tools have merits and demerits that may prescribe their respective usages in projects. This research utilized the weighted product method in the evaluation of alternatives for a construction project after considering the project owners’ requirements. The method was selected because of its ease of use and ability to turn qualitative data into quantitative information. It was hypothesized that it would provide the project owner with the needed value in the project. Different alternatives were developed and evaluated to select the preferred one. The results showed good outcome that was accepted by project owner. It was concluded that weighted product method ...

However, in the international construction arena, quantity surveyors have renowned construction competencies and are widely involved in construction projects. They have different names in different countries ‒ e.g. cost engineer, building economist, cost manager, or construction accountant. In spite of the different names, they have significant skills that have evolved to meet the increasing and changing needs of clients, especially in the international construction arena. This research investigated the roles of quantity surveyors and the complexities they may find in international construction. A literature review and survey questionnaire were used to investigate the roles, complexities, and the level of competition from other construction professionals. The results showed that quantity surveyors had many roles in construction, with a majority of them acting as representatives of clients in construction projects. Also, they experienced varied complexities and faced competition from other construction professionals. It is noteworthy that they had procedures to safeguard the survival of the profession and had room for future expansion and diversification of their roles in international construction. The research provides useful information for those professionals and clients wishing to take part in international construction.

This study assessed the predictive ability of admission GRE scores on cumulative graduation GPA scores of domestic and international graduate students. The hypothesis was that students who scored high in GRE would attain higher graduation GPAs and that there was no difference in performance based on the nationality of students. The independent variables were GRE verbal, GRE quantitative and total GRE scores while the dependent variable was the GPA score. SAS v9.3 statistical analysis software facilitated the analysis of the data obtained from three construction management graduate schools in the USA. The results showed weak predictive indices where GRE quantitative was the better predictor of GPA. Thus, the hyp...

Limitations in the conventional VE process were identified and solutions developed to counter the limitations in the respective VE phases. Performance-Worth (PW) approach in the function analysis phase, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) method in the creativity phase, and Choosing By Advantages (CBA) in the evaluation phase of VE were identified as potential avenues that could improve sustainability outcomes. It was recommended that these methods be integrated in the VE job plan to improve the desired outcomes. These new methods would simultaneously include the three facets of VE that focus on achieving project outcomes at optimum cost and at the highest performance and quality levels. Case studies could aid in investigating further these new VE approaches.

This is because they tend to believe that the GRE scores could predict the academic performance and success of students in graduate school. This study assessed the predictive ability of admission GRE scores on cumulative GPA scores at graduation of construction management graduate students. The hypothesis was that students who scored high in GRE at the time of admission would attain higher cumulative GPAs at graduation. The independent variables were GRE verbal score, GRE quantitative score, and total GRE score while the dependent variable was the GPA score. SPSS v21 and SAS v9.3 statistical analysis tools facilitated the analysis of the data sourced from three construction management graduate programs in the United States. The results showed weak predictive indices where GRE quantitative score was the better predictor of graduation GPA. Thus, the hypothesis of higher GPAs being associated with higher GRE scores was weakly supported. It was recommended that construction management graduate programs should re-evaluate requiring GRE scores as part of their admission criteria.
