Utilizing an online survey, licensed clinicians were invited to respond to open-ended questions regarding (a) common challenges they face when working with caregivers of children who have been sexually abused and (b) strategies they have found to be effective when faced with these challenges. Their responses are presented and implications for social work training and practice are reviewed.

TTM patients were compared to age and gender-matched groups of psychiatric patients without TTM (n = 28) and nonpsychiatric control volunteers (NC, n = 28) on measures of psychological distress, functioning/quality of life, and self-esteem. Results indicated that TTM patients reported more severe psychosocial impairments than did NC volunteers; however, these differences were mediated by differences in level of depression. Regression analyses indicated significant relationships between some measures of psychosocial functioning and severity of hair pulling, independent of level of depression. Finally, an interview of the impact of hair pulling on 6 domains of daily functioning (negative affect/negative self-evaluations, grooming, recreational activities, social interaction, work/housework productivity, and physical health) indicated common and wide-ranging impairments for both lifetime and current (i.e., past week) ratings. These results highlight the importance of promoting and improving resources for the clinical care of TTM patients, and provide some directions for clinicians to enhance assessment of interference caused by TTM.

Many of these challenges center around the tasks of teaching and advising. Peer-led, mutual support groups offer an accessible and effective approach to facilitating growth. Such groups offer support that addresses several common challenges facing new faculty, primarily by helping to combat isolation, and facilitate group attachment. The article draws from literature on mutual aid groups; and provides several examples illustrative of group processes from a model version of the group.

The virtual field program provided flexible, accessible options meeting the diverse and immediate needs of students. Reflections here include the project’s implementation, insights gained, and plans to sustain these new field initiatives.

As a result, there is a need to better understand the nature of father-child relationships on many levels and within the context of multiple circumstances. One specific example is the role of non-offending fathers in the care of children after child sexual abuse disclosure. Employing attachment theory as a theoretical framework, this two-paper dissertation examines the experiences of fathers as caregivers. The first paper reviews the evolution of paternal roles in the United States, documenting ways in which cultural and economic pressures of fathering have been interconnected with the development and implementation of attachment theory, child welfare policy, and direct clinical practice. Building on the discussion of paternal roles, the second paper offers a case study of a non-offending father’s experience in...

MSW programs have addressed this need by creating trauma-informed educational practice and curriculum for students. However, BSW students should be able to understand and recognize trauma to be competent, knowledgeable, and responsive in their generalist social work. This teaching note intends to inform and motivate BSW educators to consider integrating trauma-informed educational practices into their own teaching. First, we outline the importance of trauma-informed educational practice in social work education. Then, we illustrate the incorporation of this model specifically in the BSW classroom through sharing several classroom strategies that we use in our BSW classrooms. Two specific case vignettes are offered, and the importance of support for faculty to implement and continue to use these strategies is also addressed.

As a result, there is a need to better understand the nature of father–child relationships within the context of multiple circumstances. One specific example is the role of nonoffending fathers in the care of children after child sexual abuse disclosure. This article first reviews how the attachment theory has evolved to include fathers and then reviews the unique contribution of paternal attachment to the care of child victims of sexual abuse. Implications for practice include enhanced engagement and intervention strategies that incorporate fathers effectively in services, better utilizing fathers as allies in the care of their children.
