Tido como um dos maiores filósofos cristãos das últimas décadas, Plantinga foi um dos grandes responsáveis pelo ressurgimento do teísmo cristão no âmbito filosófico profissional nos últimos anos. Seus trabalhos em filosofia da religião e epistemologia causaram verdadeiras revoluções nas respectivas áreas. Este é mais um artigo do Plantinga que este blog tem o privilégio de traduzir. Neste artigo Plantinga discorre sobre como o acadêmico ou intelectual cristão deve encarar o seu labor; trata da suposta neutralidade da ciência e do academicismo em relação a posições religiosas; e como o cristão deve enfrentar e lidar com os pressupostos dessas disciplinas, que, não poucas vezes, estão em confronto direto com a fé cristã ou teísta.. Como tal universidade deveria ser? Essa é uma questão difícil por três razões: Primeira, como Chuck Wilber e outros apontaram, não temos modelos contemporâneos[1]. Não podemos olhar para Princeton (embora a amamos e a admiramos), para ver como eles fazem as coisas, como um modelo para nós. De fato, a verdade é justamente o oposto. Uma lição a ser aprendida da última palestra de George Marsden é a lição de que Princeton é um projeto falho: outrora ela era ou almejava ser uma universidade cristã, assim como nós; esse alvo, infelizmente, não foi alcançado. Assim, não podemos tomar Princeton como modelo; de fato, devemos aprender com seus erros. Segunda, se o que nós queremos é uma universidade católica ou cristã, devemos, como Nathan Hatch apontou, ousar ser diferente, seguir nosso próprio caminho, encarar os riscos envolvidos em se aventurar em territórios não explorados. Isso não é fácil; existem fortes pressões para que nos conformemos. (Mas é nossa universidade, afinal, e não temos que seguir o mesmo rebanho). E terceiro, essa é uma questão multifacetada; tem que ser pensada em conexão com a educação de pós-graduação e de graduação também; devemos pensar sobre a necessidade do tipo de conversação mencionada por Craig Lent – tanto sobre a necessidade de tal conversação, e sobre os tópicos apropriados; temos que pensar sobre curricula [N. do T.: algo comògrade curricular`], sobre relacionamentos com outras universidades que almejam o mesmo objetivo que nós, como também sobre relacionamentos com outras universidade que almejam alvos diferentes; temos que pensar o que isso implica em relação às políticas de contratação; temos que pensar sobre essas coisas e milhares de outras. Eu quero considerar apenas uma questão entre esse monte de questões: como uma universidade cristã e como a comunidade intelectual cristã deveria refletir sobre o academicismo e a ciência? O tipo de academicismo e de ciência praticado numa universidade católica deveria diferir do tipo encontrado em outros lugares? Se sim, de que forma? Eu quero apresentar um tipo de visão – não pensando ser essa a verdade completa, mas como uma contribuição à nossa conversação. Pensadores cristãos desde Agostinho, pelo menos, têm visto a história humana como envolvida num certo tipo de conflito, ou batalha, ou luta entre duas implacáveis forças espirituais opostas.
