The successive addition of H atoms to CO in the solid phase has been hitherto regarded as the pri... more The successive addition of H atoms to CO in the solid phase has been hitherto regarded as the primary route to form methanol in dark molecular clouds. However, recent Monte Carlo simulations of interstellar ices alternatively suggested the radical-molecule H-atom abstraction reaction CH3O + H2CO → CH3OH + HCO, in addition to CH3O + H → CH3OH, as a very promising and possibly dominating (70%–90%) final step to form CH3OH in those environments. Here, we compare the contributions of these two steps leading to methanol by experimentally investigating hydrogenation reactions on H2CO and D2CO ices, which ensures comparable starting points between the two scenarios. The experiments are performed under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and astronomically relevant temperatures, with H:H2CO (or D2CO) flux ratios of 10:1 and 30:1. The radical-molecule route in the partially deuterated scenario, CHD2O + D2CO → CHD2OD + DCO, is significantly hampered by the isotope effect in the D-abstraction process,...

However, there are few data related to revisit of patients who have undergone cardioversion in the Emergency Department (ED). The aim of the study was to compare ED revisit within 30 days according to the effectiveness of cardioversion and analyse the variables related to effective cardioversion. The primary endpoint was revisit to the ED within 30 days, and univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out according to the effectiveness of cardioversion. We enrolled 336 patients who underwent cardioversion in the ED. Our APEX observations allowed the detection of 41 uncontaminated rotational lines of CH3CCH in the frequency range between 172 and 356 GHz. Through an analysis under the local thermodynamic equilibrium assumption, by means of rotational diagrams, we determined T exc = 50 ± 1 K, N(CH3CCH) = (7.5 ± 0.4) × 1015 cm2, X[CH3CCH/H2] ≈ (0.8–2.8) × 10−8, and X[CH3CCH/CH3OH] ≈ 0.42 ± 0.05 for an extended emitting region (∼10″). The relative intensities of the K = 2 and K = 3 lines within a given K-ladder are strongly negatively correlated to the transitions’ upper J quantum number (r = −0.84). Pure rotational spectra of CH3CCH were simulated at different temperatures, in order to interpret this observation. The results indicate that the emission is characterized by a nonnegligible temperature gradient with upper and lower limits of ∼45 and ∼60 K, respectively. Moreover, the line ...

Its molecular charge state affects the stability of its isomeric structures, which is specially relevant in ionized astrophysical environments. We thus perform an extensive computational search for low-energy molecular structures of neutral, singly, and multiply charged naphthalene and its isomers with charge states +q = 0–4 and investigate their geometric properties and bonding situations. We find that isomerization reactions should be frequent for higher charged states and that open chains dominate their low-energy structures. We compute both the scaled-harmonic and anharmonic infrared (IR) spectra of selected low-energy species and provide the calculated scaling factors for the naphthalene neutral, cation, and dication global minima. All simulated spectra reproduce satisfactorily the experimental data and, thus, are ad...

MATERIAL AND METHODS Prospective multicenter, observational cohort study of patients aged 18 years or older who came to 5 Catalan EDs with symptoms of AF or who were found to have AF on examination. We recorded demographic information and data related to the acute episode and ED management on the first or other visits within 30 days. RESULTS We had complete follow-up data for 1052 of the 1199 patients initially registered. The mean (SD) age was 73 (13) years, and 646 (53.9%) were women. AF had already been diagnosed in 652 (54.4%). Patients with diagnosed AF were older, had more concomitant conditions, and were more likely to be taking antiarrhythmic and/or anticoagulant drugs. Pharmacologic management in the ED was similar. The 30-day revisiting rate...

The human population is highly exposed to BPA and food is believed to be a primary source of BPA exposure. The aim of this study was to test the sensitivity and specificity of a BPA enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and to measure levels of BPA in supernatants obtained from various canned foods from different countries. The concentration of BPA was measured in supernatant from different types of canned soup and vegetable mixes produced by US companies and two companies each from three different Asian countries (Korea, Japan and China), which are available at markets in the USA. ELISA results were confirmed by LC/MS/MS and shown to be in agreement. Cross-reactivity tests demonstrated that BPA ELISA kit does not cross-react with other tested phenolic compounds. There was no significant difference of BPA levels in different types of soups from different US companies. However, levels of BPA in supernatants of canned vegetable mixes of a company in the USA were 200-fold lower than the levels in canned vegetable soups of the US companies. BPA levels varied greatly among canned foods among companies in various countries. Thus, this study validated the use of a simple ELISA assay to measure levels of BPA in supernatants of canned food, which would facilitate the routine monitoring of dietary exposure to BPA. Decreasing the consumption of BPA will lead to a reduction in the risk of adverse health effects.
