Mothers are gatekeepers and providers of reproductive health education, which can prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Reproductive health education provided by African immigrant mothers is influenced by cultural experiences and cultural contexts that are not well understood and have not been studied. This study sought to describe the experience of African mothers living in the United States providing reproductive health education to their daughters aged 10 to 14 years. A qualitative descriptive design was used. Twenty African immigrant mothers were interviewed in a community setting. Qualitative content analysis approach was used for analysis. Three main themes emerged: (1) mothers' reproductive health education in their country of origin, (2) mothers' reproductive health communication with their daughters, and ...

The demand for RNs in the United States is expected to increase by 3% annually and it is estimated that the shortage of RNs in 2020 will be 285,000. Retention among nursing students is considered a global challenge. The purpose of this case study was to identify effective strategies used within University of Pittsburgh, School of Nursing to enhance nursing students’ retention rates. The study utilized a cross-section of data to present strategies used to enhance freshmen and sophomore nursing students’ retention between 2007 and 2016. For this descriptive case study, data were collected from first and second year university nursing students who were in the program between 2007 and 2016. The retention strategies employed at University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing that were identified as most significant were: adopting stringent admission criteria, identifying at-risk students...

Peer advisors are thought to be a valuable social support resource for first-year nursing students. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions and experiences of both first-year nursing students and their peer advisors in a first semester seminar course. METHODOLOGY A cross-sectional descriptive design was used on a sample that included 108 first-year nursing students and five peer advisors. RESULTS The study revealed that 68% of the participating freshmen felt that the program met their nursing school expectations and 95.1% reported that the peer advisor group meetings were beneficial and met the goals of the courses, as anticipated. Students described their peer advisors as excellent communicators, accommodating, and sensitive to diversity. The course also offered peer advisors an opportunity for personal and professional growth. CONCLUSION T...

We also discuss how mothers' perceptions of reproductive health education (RHE) influenced the education of their own daughters aged 10-14 years. This was a qualitative descriptive study. Data were collected via interviews and demographic survey. The sample size was 20 African immigrant mothers living in a mid-sized city in the U.S. Interviews were transcribed verbatim. Qualitative data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Myths and taboos related to menstruation, sexual intercourse, pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS were reported by the women interviewed. Discussion of these issues was largely taboo, and most myths the mothers learned growing up pertained to sexual intercourse, pregnancy prevention, and pregnancy termination using non-hormonal ingested substances. African immigrant mothers have been inhibited by several factors from providing their daughters with CSE. The primary aim of this study was to identify attitudes and beliefs of Sub-Saharan immigrant mothers living in the United States towards providing comprehensive sex education to their daughters aged 12-17Â years. The study utilized a one-time anonymous nine-question survey. Fifteen women who met the inclusion criteria completed the study survey online or via paper format. African immigrant mothers are willing to allow comprehensive sex to be taught in schools and at home. Accepted education appears to range from religious and moral teaching to some factual information. This research will potentially assist in the designing of more culturally appropriate comprehensive sex education programs for African immigrant mothers and their daughters.

Fifty patients who received mechanical ventilation and died during hospitalization were randomly selected from all adult patients (N = 396) treated in 8 ICUs in a tertiary medical center during a 12-month period. Clinicians' notes, use of physical restraints, and medication records were reviewed retrospectively. Data on communication method, use of sedation/analgesia (within 4 hours of communication event), and use of physical restraints were recorded on an investigator-developed communication event record for the first 10 communication episodes documented in each patient's record (n = 275). Message content and method were recorded for every documented communication episode (n = 694), resulting in a total of 812 content and 771 method data codes. Most charts (72%) had documentation of communication by patients at s...

Data from a multisite, case-controlled, telephone survey study were used in a secondary analysis to evaluate the parameters stated in the purpose. The 87 females with type 1 diabetes and 45 nondiabetic females who participated were 16 to 22 years old. Most were Caucasian, in high school, and lived with their parents. No demographic differences were noted between the groups. Of those sexually active, for both groups, the most common contraceptive method was male condoms. Four females with diabetes and 2 without diabetes reported an unplanned pregnancy. Three females with diabetes reported an STD infection (chlamydia or trichomonas). Five females with diabetes and 4 nondiabetic females had abnormal pap tests. Adolescent females with and without diabetes engaged in less than optimally protected sexual activity, which increased their risk for unplanned pregnancies and STD infections. Further research is needed of the incidence, treatment, and short-term and long-term complications of STDs in adolescent females with diabetes.
