The dataset is a subset of the EA BRAHMS database generated over several years through various projects and day-to-day digitization efforts. Specimen records from the Tana River Basin were extracted from the EA BRAHMS dataset then cleaned and formatted in Darwin Core Standard. Data cleaning was done using Open Refine Software as well as the GPS Visualizer tool to generate altitude values from coordinates. Elevation data from GPS Visualizer is controlled from a variety of reputable sources including SRTM, ASTER, USGS and Google Maps. Other cleaning tasks included correcting spellings, filling in missing data, checking the taxonomy, dates, and subnational administrative areas. Records without coordinates were georeferenced using GEOLocate, Google Maps, and Gazetteers. The field altitude (m) was automatically generat...

This include 213 occurrence records of mammal species recorded in a field expedition undertaken in mid Tana River Basin (TRB) ecosystem (Bangal, Garissa, Bura and Hola), in between 1st to 7th November 2019. A total of 38 different small and medium sized mammal species of 11 orders were recorded from above expedition. Order Cetartiodactyla (Even-toed Ungulates), Carnivora (Carnivorans) and Primates (Primates) were the most common. Of the 213 mammal observations counted in the entire study areas, the sightings of Kirk's Dik-dik (Madoqua kirkii) were the most abundant followed by Yellow Baboon (Papio cynocephalus). Three groups of Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) cumulatively of 35 animals, were observed in between Garissa to Bulanandir-Kora Kora. The rangeland in the study areas (Bangal, Garissa, Bura and Hola) was devoid of large and medium sized mammals, probably because of illegal bush-meat hunting, highly degrad...
The dataset represents occurrence records for mammal species in the Tana River Basin (TRB) ecosys... more The dataset represents occurrence records for mammal species in the Tana River Basin (TRB) ecosystem as well as a few outliers from the Aberdare National Park. The data were mainly sourced from published literature and the accessions register of mammal collections maintained by the Mammalogy Section, National Museums of Kenya (NMK). A few additional records were gleaned from unpublished grey literature as well as sightings and reports by ecotourism websites and lodges operating in TRB. Existing records were supplemented by fieldwork in selected areas to help in ground-truthing and filling data gaps. A total of 935 occurrence records represented by 16 orders, 46 families, 124 genera and 183 mammal species are presented here. Sites frequently visited in the past including Mt. Kenya and Meru National Parks had the largest number of mammal observations, while less visited sites such as Mumoni Hill Forest had very few records. The TRB is important for the protection of nine mammals endem...

The sites included Jamhuri Forest, Bura, Danabale, Daba, Wayu Boru, Halo, Hirimani, Wale Sorhrea, Walesocha, Wenje, Duwayo, Bilbil, Bula Rahama, Bula Nadir, Raya, and Bangale. The plants species were mainly identified on site to the species level and documented as site records. However, in a few cases, voucher specimens were collected for confirmation and preservation at the East African Herbarium, National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi. Coordinates were taken on site using a Garmin GPSMAP 64s.
