The approach was applied at the University of Piraeus. Students from the Department of Statistics and Insurance Sciences participated in the research. The paper focuses on empirical research results on students’ attitudes towards the approach, concerning the cognitive tool used (Mathematica), the approach’s discovery learning and constructivistic characteristics and the development of higher order thinking skills supported by the approach. Regarding factors that could influence students’ attitudes, gender and experience in using computers are investigated. This paper uses quantitative methods in analyzing data collected via the use of a questionnaire and the research approaches used are the descriptive / investigative and the correlational approach.

The program consists of a) the presentation of the most characteristic theories of learning, teaching methods and models and models of using computers in the teaching–learning environment and b) the training of teachers in the use of computer software programs that are being chosen as appropriate to offer more than the traditional instruction. Moreover we present the results of the application of the program in the Mathematics’ Department of the University of Athens during the academic years 1999–2000 and 2000–2001. The computer software program used in the application is Mathematica in point of the possibilities it offers in the negotiation of mathematical subjects in Secondary Mathematics’ Education. This paper studies the evaluation of the use of the program by the pre–service and in–service teachers that participated in the res...

We argue that computational science and computational experiment can be applied in connection with STEM epistemology, when physical computing activities are embedded in the curriculum for Higher Education students. In order to implement this connection, we present software applications that combine algorithms and physical computing. We believe that engaging students through their existing STEM courses in physical computing - in the form of the computational experiment methodology- is a strategy that is much more likely to succeed in increasing the interest and appeal of STEM epistemology. Different learning modules were designed, which covered the combination of easy java simulations (Ejs) with Ardui...

Moreover, the paper presents empirical research results of a case study concerning the approach’s application at the Department of Statistics and Insurance Sciences of the University of Piraeus and focuses on students’ attitudes towards the approach. We used a mixed approach in the study, in particular a quantitative approach with open-ended questions. A questionnaire was handed out and was answered by the students that participated. We performed statistical analysis via SPSS to data obtained by questions with binary answers and answers on a 7-point Likert scale. Also we included several open-ended questions, in order for the students to express their vie...

In particular the paper aims in identifying factors regarding students’ scores and attitudes affected by the approach and groups of students with similar characteristics based on these factors. Data was obtained by a study realized at the Department of Statistics and Insurance Sciences of the University of Piraeus, concerning the application of the discovery learning/constructivistic approach using Mathematica on the course Calculus (Functions of multiple variables). Multivariable analysis methods are used in the data analysis, in particular factor analysis in identifying factors and cluster analysis in identifying groups of students with similar characteristics, in combination with i...

A definition of critical thinking is provided, the most important models-frameworks of critical thinking that have been developed since 1950 are briefly described and Halpern’s framework of critical thinking skills and dispositions is analyzed further. Suggestions on teaching basic concepts of Secondary Statistics based on Halpern’s model are presented. Also, interdisciplinary problems in the spirit of the OECD PISA program (Programme for International Student Assessment) are presented in correspondence to topics of Secondary Education Statistics and Mathematics (Algebra) Curriculum and in correspondence to the critical thinking skills, as defined by Halpern’s model, whose development each specific problem can support.

The approach is based on the principles of Discovery learning expanded with the principles of constructivist, socioâ??cultural and adult learning theories, the concept of computer based cognitive tools and the aspects on which the computational experiment is founded. Applications are presented using the software Mathematica and electronic worksheets for selected domains of Physics. We also present a case study, concerning the application of the computational experiment through electronic worksheets in the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (ASPETE) during the spring semester of the academic year 2008â??2009. Research results concerning the impact of the above mentioned issues on studentsâ?? beliefs and learning perfo...
