Legendás csontoktól egy matrózlázadásig. Huszonnégy írás a múlt és a történeti források kapcsolatáról a hatvanéves Grüll Tibor köszöntésére. Budapest: Pesti Kalligram, 2024

However, they were aware that another alphabet had been used a few hundred years earlier, and several hundred years further back only that ancient alphabet had existed – the same one that was still in use among the despised Samaritans. The sages knew of the existence of Torah manuscripts written in the old alphabet as well, such as those that have survived in the Qumran caves. What kind of traditions preserved the memory of the change of alphabet? And how did the sages cope with the theological tension provoked by the fact that the script of the Torah – authoritative down to its letters – got changed somewhere along the chain of tradition? These are the problems that the present paper seeks to outline. Keywords: Hebrew and Aramaic alphabets; scripts for Scriptures; Ezra; apocrypha; tannaitic traditions

Further down the road from the destruction of the second Temple, though, this stumbling-block had to be removed by smoothing away the alleged contradictions, since the book’s prestige was soon raised by the high hopes of redemption it evoked. Thus, the outcome of the ‘accreditation procedure’ had been decided before it was conducted; nevertheless, generations of sages were challenged to contribute: to fill in the gaps and smooth over the inconsistencies created when the Book of Ezekiel and the Torah had been fitted into the same canon of Scripture. The details of the ‘procedure’ are presented in this second part of my paper outlining three major themes of discussion from the buildings of Ezekiel’s temple district to its staff policies and sacrificial regulations.

However, after the Churban, the tables were turned, and the Second Temple’s memory ended up getting eclipsed by the high hopes of redemption evoked by Ezekiel’s vision. In this first part of my paper, I will be charting the interactions – of rivalry, essentially – between the two Temples in rabbinic thought and discourse, to set the scene to a presentation, in the second part, of the ways in which the actual discrepancies between the Torah and Ezekiel were accounted for and harmonized.

His scribes, therefore, must have learnt their master’s lesson. In fact, they did not simply rely on their readers’ comprehension of Jeremiah’s texts on the sentence level: they also seem to have applied, with the fragmented structure of one of the book’s large subcollections, an editorial meta-language to convey the prophet’s main message; namely, Judah’s fate of brokenness. In the Hebrew Bible, Jeremiah’s is the only book where the collaboration between the author/protagonist and his scribes/editors is quite transparent: their prophetic collection was forward-looking also for the fact that the prophet, in its pages, passed the baton on to the main guarantors of the people’s survival after the Hurbans; that is, the scribes. With that in mind, I will first outline the main features of the book’s structure, as well as the main trends of related research; then, I will sketch the differences between its two versions with the aim to shed light on the nature of the editorial work. I will also set out, in chapter II, my view on the arrangement of the Masoretic version by following the editors’ hands. All this will serve to determine, in chapter III, whether this version contains evidence of a conscious editorial program even where research has tendentially seen mere randomness – and if so, what messages the structure may have been meant to convey.

Although this connection as a hypothesis is widely supported, entirely convincing evidence still has not been found. This paper will present a so far unpublished Aramaic/Hebrew inscription that the authors found accidentally in the villa, which may reinforce this long suspected connection and contribute to our understanding of the life and general conditions of the Jewish diaspora living in Campania prior to 79 CE. Hence, the main goal of this article is to call the attention of the scholarly community to a still unknown graffito, inviting scholars to contribute to its interpretation.
