National teaching standards, complex evaluation rubrics, and trained evaluators are all used in an effort to achieve valid and reliable results, especially since job security may be at stake. While standardized rubrics are widely used for the evaluation of teaching practice, these rubrics were developed with a focus primarily on teachers in academic subjects. While there is research evidence that some of these rubrics may be valid for differentiating performance among academic subject teachers, there is no evidence that these are valid for music teachers. In addition, measuring teachers’ contributions to student learning growth is also a requirement in some evaluation systems, and for music teachers, this requirement presents unique challenges.
