The main intention is to shed light on the relationship of these theoretical concepts with the construction of architectural form and the episteme of architecture itself. One such concept is the identity of architecture. In this context, this research aims to clarify the interplay between identity – as a theoretical concept that is directly related to the form – and the architectural discipline. The first hypothesis is that architectural forms do not have a particular identity detached from their formal essence, but have an identity expressed by morphology. Second, different architectures, being forms of representations, express an external identity depended on the historical, political, social or cultural conditions. This article defines three main plans through which the identity of an architectural work is manifested: formal, stylistic/linguistic, and technolo...

The aim of this article is to investigate on a series of strategies and designing instruments that targets the regeneration of urban areas that have lost functionality or never had one, causing this way the malfunction of an entire urban tissue. The initial hypothesis is that through increasing the permeability, a minimal spatial transformation and creating several functions, which are consistent to the contemporary needs of the society, the image and the quality of the urban areas can be retransformed, affecting this way directly the perception of the society on a specific settlement. The methodology followed to confirm this hypothesis will be based on the study of two cases of "industrial archeology" and also on extracting from them a series ...

According to our preliminary investigations, it was observed that these traditional cities have difficulty in access and mostly on wheels’ mobility. Firstly, the traditional urban pattern of these cities, due to the limited width and high slope, find difficulties to adapt their structure into contemporary vehicular flows which nowadays are subject to traffic code standards. Secondly, traditional cities, because of their image preservation, are very sensitive on defining appropriate parking areas for new vehicles. The excessive car presence in the city center because of congestion, pollution, and occupation of central streets hinder tourism development in the area. The o...

The objective of this paper is to emphasize the structural differences between tectonic and stereotomic architecture by analyzing the different structural behaviors of both languages. The initial hypothesis is that an interaction field can be found where these two languages can be combined to propose a design method for a preliminary design process. The methodology goes through the following steps: the first step, analysis and determination of tectonic and stereotomic modelling approach; the second step, analysis of a single 10 story perforated shell structure by changing the openings ratio from a structural point of view and the third step, interpretation of results stating these two different architectural and structural profiles are intertwined. The instruments used are presented by a multivariate visualization method, an easy-to-use and as a key concept for generating the perforated pattern of the shell structure. They describe a visual and interactive, performance informed tool-using software of Rhino Grasshopper, Karamba 3D plugin, indicating the designer’s preferences and concluding with the structural control of the model build. It is expected that the results will introduce a generative design method for architecture grounded on the stereotomic and tectonic modelling approach that can contribute towards the integration of structural rationality into preliminary architectural design process of tall buildings.
