This study was done to evaluate the usefulness of blood spot 17-OHP in monitoring disease control in pre-pubertal children with CAH, to correlate it with simultaneously extracted venous 17-OHP levels, and to compare blood spot levels of children with CAH with that of normal non-virilized children. Nine pre-pubertal children with CAH (1 male; 8 females) were enrolled in the study. Age, sex, growth velocity, height age and bone age were determined. Simultaneous venous and blood spot specimens were taken between 0800 and 0900 hours. Nine pre-pubertal, age- and sex-matched normal non-virilized children served as controls. COAT-A-COUNT was used to measure venous 17-OHP levels, and AutoDELFIA Neonatal 17alpha-OH-progesterone was employed for blood spot specimens. Mean age of patients with CAH was 42.78 months (SD= 21.45214). Four had simple virilizing form and five were salt-losers. Venous 17-OHP levels ranged from 7.5 to 800nmol/l. Blood spot 17-OHP levels ranged from < or =0.5000nmol/l to 355.5nmol/l. There was a strong positive correlation between the venous and blood spot determination, with a correlation coefficient gamma= 0.947 (p < 0.001). All of the children in the control group had a blood spot 17-OHP level < or =0.5000nmol/l. Taking blood spot 17-hydroxyprogesterone levels is a simple, acceptable, convenient, and less costly alternative to venous 17-OHP determination in monitoring treatment response of children with CAH. The decision to make treatment modification, however, should be made on random blood spot 17-OHP interpretation in conjunction with clinical history and evaluation of growth parameters.

Methodology: Eligible parents of patients seen at the Pediatric Outpatient Department, Pediatric Emergency Room and Pediatric Wards of the Philippine General Hospital were recruited into the study. The original survey tool was translated to Filipino by the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino. A focus group of four experts in the field of vaccination rated the content of each item on the questionnaire based on its relevance. Ten Filipino speaking participants were then recruited to check its face validity. This was then implemented to 67 Filipino speaking participants to check its test-retest reliability. Results: The overall item content validity index of the questionnaire was computed to be 0.95. All items had a 100% rating in terms of clarity and simplicity. The high intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.970 supports the tool’s tes...

Barriers have previously stifled the conduct of research - inadequate or inaccessible funding, insufficient time due to academic responsibilities, and lengthy research application and publication processes have deterred potential researchers. Thanks to the tenacity of the faculty, the department has surmounted these obstacles and now continues to live up to the University’s expectations. The selfless dedication of the editors, peer reviewers, and researchers led to fruition and inspiration to replicate this achievement. The faculty believes that an unpublished study is close to not having done the study at all. The publication of this sponsored issue of the Acta Medica Philippina affirms the department’s determination to disseminate knowledge. Family communication facilitates coping from a genetic condition by ensuring accurate understanding of the illness, its inheritance pattern, associated recurrence risks and risk perception. Objective. This paper explores Filipino mothers’ experience in communicating information about congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) to their children. Methods. Descriptive qualitative design was used. Families affected with CAH were recruited via a CAH support group. Semi-structured interviews with mothers were done on the following topics: content and understanding of information communicated, reasons for communicating, and changes and adjustments in the family. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Results. Five families consisting of 11 individuals, including four mothers, were interviewed. Findings revealed that while mothers are open to communicate with their child about CAH, this is often triggered by questions from the child. Mothers find it challenging to discuss abo...
