Using a well-structured database of Eurostat supply tables (EU-27), results demonstrate: a) entering a food core business need not be difficult for newcomers; b) The EU Food Industry has capabilities to undertake extra-core business activities below the average of the EU-27 system; and, c) the food industry's secondary production is too heterogeneous and distributed over a wide range of activities. This study highlights productive trends, hypothesizing capacity needs and creates the necessary framework for further investigation.

Mathematics has the longest history at the level of its phylogeny, since it built in time many alternating systems of consistent relations, even if they clashed when they had to be mixed and glued together. The mathematical evolution of the individual (ontogeny) is subject to sudden jumps unlike the softer evolution of less structured disciplines. The moments of confrontation between different structures or innovation sparks need time to affect the existing structures, both in philogeny and in ontogeny. Bak-Sneppen models of evolution help to understand many social phenomena, especially when voluntary or random competition may hinder the search of optimal individual paths, but at the same time forces development. The conceptual lens used is the resource-based view (R-BV) of the firm and in particular its spill-over, the “natural” R-BV. For EU-27 countries of the last decade, the Ghosh’s input-output model is applied to identify the valuable relationships concerning sale intermediate trade contacts (ITC). Furthermore Gini index and Lorenz curve demonstrate that Waste resource is quite concentrated and thus rare. This result suggests the necessity of developing initiatives aiming to strengthen the partnership between businesses, enhancing the sale-network profitability.

Our research aimed at exploring the attractiveness of the mountain product label for consumers, considering both attitude towards the label itself and purchase intentions. We propose a model to investigate relationships between four latent constructs — mountain attractiveness, mountain food attractiveness, attitude towards the mountain product label, and purchase intention — which have been tested, thus confirming the statistical relevance of the relationships. All 47 items selected for describing the latent constructs are suitable for this purpose. Ridge and LASSO results also show that 17 items of the first three constructs are relevant in explaining purchase intentions. Some contextual variables, such as age, income, geographical origin of consumers, and knowledge of mountain products and mountains f...

The Experience of Community Gardening. The crisis of conventional agriculture has highlighted the opportunities and the challenges for developing a locally-based agriculture, leading to: a) re-locate part of locally based (in situ) agriculture in order to increase self-sufficiency, differentiate production through specialization in gardens for vegetables, small fruits (berries) and kitchen (eggs, poultry etc); b) avoid competition with conventional farming (mainly cereal production); c) reduce transportation costs that became prohibitive; and d) promote direct sale to local people (farmer markets). After examining the theoretical basis of the concepts of “ local communities” and of “civic agriculture”, we attempt to identify the contradictions of both of them and to formulate a new concept of civic agriculture resulting from a synthesis of U.S. and European experiences about community gardening.

First of all: who wins along the centuries? Second: the fight between res extensa, territory, and res cogitans, nets and nodes. Third: the contrast between the theory of Central Places and the Reticular theory. And then the study of the form of boundaries between urban and rural: are they minimizing paths or tend to become fractals so long as possible? In order to give non emotive answers a scientific framework, that has the capability of classifying and distinguishing, is required. Mathematics supplies some consistent definitions that can be tailored in order to correspond to real experience. The main concepts of measure theory are presented in an easy-to-grasp form. Some critical and appealing cases are shown, involving the “popular” fractals. In particular the most surprising property of fractional dimension is defined and shown by examples. The section that joins theory with actual...

Its basin has been the cradle of ancient and prosperous civilizations. The Nile basin is rich in natural tangible and intangible resources which are witnessing massive processes of grabbing in the recent decades. Resource grabbing is a complexity directly associated with the ownership and foreign direct investments. It is a challenging issue for the international juridical system in terms of transparency, accountability, fight against corruption, money laundering, human rights and national sovereignty, international development cooperation and humanitarian integrity. Sometimes, the emphasis on land or water grabbing alone might be generalized, bloated and exaggeratedly over reported, and the actors behind it might be misleadingly described. But, when we consider the overall and the complex impact and implications of realistic and dystopian outlook of resource grabbing and future p...

Unlike other studies in which the core lies in expanding the number of conflicting species, here the stress is laid upon a control variable that does not need to be of the same nature as the species involved in the conflict. As in the case of the logistic equation Lotka-Volterra models have proved highly fruitful also outside the pure biological frame, clarifying many socio-economical and psychological evolution phenomena. A main problem lies in the change of the structural parameters, that can alter the evolution. Rather than an exterior action a model is most satisfactory in presence of an endogenous change, that should happen without any external intervention. The critical model is described in Section 2 under the name of tripartite antagonist model, where there are three actors, and three predator-prey equations involving, two at each time, the actors. The structure is that ea...

One of the fundamental characteristics of a system in a self-organized state is to exhibit a stationary state with a long-range power law of decay of both spatial and temporal correlations.
