The paradigms of comparison with reality used in the Far East are so different from those we know... more The paradigms of comparison with reality used in the Far East are so different from those we know that they shape, first, an observation system, secondly, a reading system, finally, an interpretation system that leads to a knowledge based on analogical-symbolic criteria which are very different from those analyticaldeductive typical of the West. We can know Chinese Medicine completely only if we would do our best to agree to these codes and methods that manifest themselves in a language unexpectedly rich in such evocative-relational potentialities that, perhaps, they fit in the comparison with the complex systems that are the basis of the state of health and illness more than the western ones. This article, inserted in the Italian Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, hasn't got to seem unusual, with its cultural connotations apparently unrelated to the real medical subject. Its aim is to make the reader less ingenuous and to provide her with the criteria for a more sophisticated reading of the model of comparison with reality China has used for millennia. On the other hand, the integration between the two medicines-which is no doubt our ultimate aim-cannot leave out of this right and proper task. We begin this work with an introduction to the Chinese language and to the ideographic writing which represents the whole codes China has used for millennia by now, in order to read, describe and interpret reality. The relationship between this writing and the analogical-symbolic method of knowledge based on the system of correspondences represents the further step of this way. The analysis of some basic ideograms will allow us to give an example of the methods of interrelation with reality which is the basis of the Chinese writing; at the same time it will introduce us to the fundamentals of some schools of thought which supplied the cultural background of Chinese Medicine: Naturalist, Taoist, Confucian school. As a matter of fact, in the V-IV century a.C. the so-called "The one hundred schools" were the unrepeatable occasion for the genesis of this model of medicine that syncretistically collects various inheritances by amalgamating their contents and methods. contributi italiani Linguaggio e modelli teorici nella scienza medica: riflessioni critiche
