Thirty-four CHC patients were prospectively evaluated (18 patients with 180 μg/week of peg-IFN-α2a plus 800 mg/day of RBV and 16 with 1.5μg/kg/week of peg-IFN-α2b plus 800–1,200 mg/day of RBV). Complete ophthalmological evaluation and serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels were assessed before and at the end of therapy. Thirteen patients (38.2%) developed VOSE, eight (23.5%) featured subconjunctival haemorrhage, and five (14.7%) had evidence of retinopathy – all were unrelated to age, sex, genotype, the type of antiviral schedule used and response to therapy. At the end of treatment, the VOSE group had significantly higher serum VEGF levels than the group of patients without detectable side effects (median 281 [range 106–386] vs ...

Non random selection of consecutive patients seeking tooth extraction between 9 January and 7 March 2007 at the dental care units of Burela, Praza do Ferrol and Viveiro (Lugo). The study included sociodemographic, clinical, utilization, behavioural and IC-related variables. A total of 462 patients, mainly males (n=249; 53.9%) entered the study. The mean age of the participants was 57.87+/-17.54 years. 93.7% of the patients gave their consent for tooth extraction, whereas 47.3% did not want to be informed. The average time employed for obtaining the informed consent was 3.40+/-1.87 minutes, with a median of 4 and the same mode. The referred stress values did not differ before and after reading the informed consent form 3.28+/-2.52 vs 3.41+/-2.45 (p=0.661). Routine application of the informed consent form before tooth extraction under local anaes...

The variables considered were "demographic" (age, gender, address and educational level), "treatment-related" (reason for extraction, root extraction), "attitudes" (accompanied yes/no, spontaneous fear comments yes/no) and "stress" determined using a visual analogue scale (VAS). A total of 804 patients entered the study. The mean VAS value was 3.54+/-2.63 (range 0 to 10; median 2.95; mode 0). A 96.8% referred some degree of stress, and a 10.1% of the sample scored high values (>7.5 in the scale). These values resulted to be influenced by sex (p=0.000), address (p=0.025) and by the presenc...

This feature tends to inhibit the genetic variation and the emergence of new individuals by sexual recombination. Therefore, sexual propagation between species it is considered necessary to obtain new individuals with desirable characteristics for cultivation. In this paper we were able to obtain hybrids of two species of vanilla. In general, the hybrids seeds obtained whit the higher germination percentage were interspecific crosses of V. planifolia and V. pompona (85%), followed by reverse cross V. planifolia and V. pompona (57.9%). Seeds obtained of V. pompona self-pollination were very low germination (10.8%) while those obtained from V. planifolia self-pollination showed no germination in any media culture. The most efficient medium for all treatments was the Murashige & Skoog (MS) supplemented whit 400 mg/L -1 glutamine and 80 mg/L -1 of adenine sulfate.

Cross-sectional analysis of a non-probabilistic sample (n=716) in border communities with and without preventive and medical care STI/ HIV interventions. Variables associated with having access to information, respect to PLWHA; HIV/STD tests, condom use and medical care were identified. Youth in communities with interventions have higher levels of information regarding STI/HIV, attitudes of respect toward PLWHA (94.1 vs. 75.3%) and access to HIV tests (50.8 vs. 14.7%). 52% of youngsters had intercourse. Condom use was higher among those who participated in preventive actions (60.5 vs. 50.9%) and those with international mobility (70.6 vs. 51.9%). 8.8% had STI symptoms; only 55% sought medical attention. Community interventions are associated with higher levels of information, respect for the rights of PLWHA and...
